US Airways cutting in-flight movies

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Thu Jul 10, 2008 11:24 am

US Airways says it will start removing in-flight entertainment systems on domestic flights in November to save about $10 million annually in fuel and other costs.

Sounds like a boon for airport book and magazine sales, not to mention DVD players.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I seriously doubt that all those little screens, plus the disc needed to send the movie to all of them, weigh more than I do. Or the people I generally have to share the row of seats with.

I bet a "thin people fly cheaper" program would get a lot of people into weight loss they've been "putting off".

That makes sense to me. No pie for me, I have a flight to catch.

And maybe a new kiosk selling purgatives and emetics for just before the pre-boarding weigh-in ...

Don't even get me started on this, I am forever aggravated that I have to pay 50 bucks for a bag that goes over 50 pounds, while someone can be more than 3 times my weight and still insist on paying for (and squeezing into) one seat.

Pay by the pound!! I'd sign a petition!!

Soon you will have to pay to use the toilet and even more to use the toilet paper.

I'd gladly pay for it now, if it meant someone would go in there at least once during the flight and clean it up and maybe spritz some air freshener! Heck I'd pay for that even if I didn't use it but had a seat within 4 rows of the bathroom! They always stink!

On my second flight yesterday, the bathroom facilities were declared "out of order" while we were still in the terminal, and they delayed boarding by five minutes in case anybody wanted to race down the concourse for a pre-flight nature stop. Nobody complained, to my knowledge. We all wanted to get home more than we wanted to delay the plane to repair whatever had gone wrong.

If they ever do go to a by-the-pound program, I think they should combine the weight of the person and the luggage. That would encourage almost everybody to pack more lightly. (Yesterday I witnessed several passengers with carry-on bags for which they didn't have the physical strength to lift to the overhead bins.)

Did you know you get Charmin to go...both tissue and seat covers. I haven't purchased the seat covers, but must admit to having purchased the tissue.

Might be worth looking into for the next trip.

I've never seen the seat covers, but I did purchase the tissue when I went to Europe. I heard horror stories, but turns out there were actual toilets and toilet paper everywhere I went! And I only had to pay at the leaning tower of Pisa and Victoria Station in London.

Oh sure, Europe is one thing. But trying finding either in Mongolia! Of course there weren't a whole lot of people around either if you needed to resort to the nearest tree or bush.

Then again there wasn't exactly a plethora of trees or bushes in Mongolia when you needed one...

So having enough TP tended to be the least of your concerns. Of course you didn't have to worry much about paying either...

Fortunately for me, the flight where they threatened to show Definitely, Maybe was an overnighter, so I was spared. But it may have helped put the kids to sleep. On the way home they showed 21, which I had wanted to see because I had read the book, and it was entertaining but not half as interesting as the real story.

I can take or leave most movies. I saw The Last Mimzy without sound since I had surrendered the headphones to Rain Man, and I can't imagine having wanted to HEAR it, too...
One more for the road!
