I just got done watching the performances from Tuesday (I was out of town until last night). A few random thoughts, not that it matters now:
(FTR, I do know who got booted last night.)
- Michael's version of "Dream On" (which, admittedly, is not one of my favorite Aerosmith songs, of which there are precious few) was a mess. And don't get me started on the falsetto. D.
- Syesha was....good, but not great. Dumb song (no matter how they gushed over Fantasia's version), good technically, but soulless. B-
- Kristy was surprisingly effective, at least technically, but she still has to get over the whole lack-of-a-personality thing. B
- Cook was just downright awful. Horrible song choice, beginning the song about 3 octaves lower than his voice can take it, pretentious (which I think is more accurate than "pompous") "performance", although the "give back" hand message was interesting -- but at first I thought it said "Not Penny's Boat". Horrible, awful, execrable stuff, and almost as bad as the travesty of "Eleanor Rigby" (which I may be in the minority of hating, but I stand by my opinion). I was beginning to like the guy, too.... D.
- Archuletta was....agreeable. I know, I can't believe I'm saying it either. I've still not swallowed the Kool-Aid yet, but there were 5 or 7 notes in there that I really liked. Not the ones at the beginning, and DEFINITELY not the ones at the end (the histrionics were, as usual for me, overblown), but there were a couple in the middle that showed that maybe the hormones are finally kicking in. B.
- Carly: Um....no. Just no. F-.
Which leaves the two best performances, for me, of the night:
- Brooke. I like her more and more every week. Sweet, simple (and yes, I love Carole King)....lovely. I do wish she'd sat behind the piano, though. A-.
and my winner of the evening:
- Jason. I'm NOT a huge fan of Brudda Iz's "Rainbow"...but I loved Jason's version of the same arrangement. A.
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.
