Not another Kwai story

#1 Post by macrae1234 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 10:46 am

Last night's Jeopardy

Category "SHORT LINE"
In this 1957 war movie, Col. Saito tells his captives, "Be happy in your work!"

(Bill: What is "Bridge of the River Kwai"?
Alex: No. Bryan or Jean?
...
Alex: I'll tell you why, Bill. You said "Bridge of the River Kwai" instead of on. Sorry, you misspoke...)

Isn't the French title "Le Pont de la Rivière Kwaï" not "Le Pont sur la Rivière Kwaï"

But the question was about the movie and its title.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

The answer would seem to be "none of the above". The movie title is "The Bridge on the River Kwai"...

It also seems the most typical english translation of the french novel is "The Bridge Over the River Kwai" or the same title used by the novel rather than the more literal translation using "of".

Ah, but the clue referred to the movie, which is indisputably "The Bridge on the River Kwai". I read somewhere the movie title is a reference to the final scene, when that's where the bridge ends up.

I'm usually the first to jump to the defense of someone who mistranslates a pronoun (see my last game, first daily double of the Double Jeopardy round), but I think this distinction is kosher.

And the Jeopardy people let you add or omit leading articles with impunity.

It should also be interesting to note that the $200 Word Puzzles clue in your last game was repeated last night.
