Thompson died from a recurrence of lymphona, according to a statement from his family to the newspaper.
"It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of grief that we share the passing our brother, husband, father, and grandfather who died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by his family," the statement said.

My favorite Thompson role was on Wise Guy when he played the head of a white supremacist group. What the FBI gradually learn as they try to nail him is that he's only a con artist using the group to make money. It was his flunky, played by Paul Guilfoyle, who committed the real acts of violence. In the final scene of the story arc, you see him selling real estate to Jewish retirees in Florida, offering them samples of Manischevitz wine to close the deal.

I enjoyed his turn as Arthur Branch on Law and Order. The last time I saw him in an appearance for reverse mortgages, he seemed much older to me, and I guessed that he was in his mid-80s. This is upsetting, to learn he was 73. I don't how to avoid lymphoma, but whatever it takes, I hope I'm doing it.
