The jukebox at the bowling alley has a video screen that shows the album cover the song being played comes from, and I just happened to walk by and noticed this one while "Royals" was playing. I was tickled at the fact that she appeared to be holding a possum, of all things... so I looked up the album cover when I got home to verify for myself. There doesn't seem to be any clear answers on just what species the white animal she's holding is, though rat and possum were the two most popular guesses. So I contacted one of my blogging friends who lives on Lorde's side of the world for an opinion, and she was certain it was one of their many unique brands of possum that inhabit the area around where she lives in Australia... and that was good enough for me.
A few comments:

1) That is an EP, not an album.

2) The album cover is simply white on black:

3) Lorde is from New Zealand, not Australia. There's a big difference...

Do you mean that you can't hear the similarities in those two songs or you don't understand how people can hear two different songs and realize they're similar? In my case I think it's because I come from a family of professional musicians as well as being a musician myself (although not a professional), so I hear notes and progressions and phrasings like some would hear words.

I don't remember saying anything ass crack worthy...unless it was comparing Putin to Lil' Kim or ranking the gayness of stripes v. checks v. argyle. (See what you people miss by not catching my rare appearances in chat????)

Also, I realized hours later out of nowhere that I meant the Cubs, not the Reds. The whole Braves/Cubs Cardinals/Reds thing always vexed me. That was just about the time that I realized that I did the krox backwards, but I have slydexia and I'm pretty sure that according to the ADA you have to count me as correct.

To make up for that, I came up with an alternate krox with a higher degree of difficulty both in team name and genre:

Red Necks, White Socks and Blue RIbbon Beer - Johnny Russell
Indian Outlaw - Tim McGraw

So it's your fault that I couldn't sleep for two hours because I had Johnny Duncan and Dave Dudley songs going through my head.....

I think that maybe the animal on the EP ALBUM might be an ermine (or an indigenous animal that was inspired by the ermine in the painting), because that artwork reminds me of da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine.

And, lastly, I actually saw an interview with Lorde where she talked about the Royals inspiration. It was a picture of George Brett, but it had nothing to do with baseball or the city. She was just struck by the Royals logo on his uni and thought it would be a cool song title....

And, dammit! I originally had 4, 5, and 10 but then thought that Brave would be too recent to be on a Mecca CD so I just shaved it down to 1 since Sister Christian seemed more likely than One Toke Over the Line.....ha!

Larry Bud Selig wrote:Good morning, fans of our Bored's national pastime. As I enter the sixteeth year of my promised retirement as commissioner of this fine musical institution, I can't help but reflect on the many wonderful things I have brought to the fine sport of Lyrically Speaking. I have added David "Fatass" Wells points to help bridge the gap between the have and have nots, giving players like Marley just as good a chance of winning as Esto. I have adopted the designated player to increase scoring and ensure that Bob and smiler will never have to come to the plate in LSWE. I have internationalized the game, which has drawn players from far off lands like Saucy in Canada and Jessie from Uranus. I have unilaterally declared that Weasel's uniform number 9 would be retired throughout the game in perpetuity, and that every year on the anniversary of his airdate, all LSWE players will take the field wearing 9 to honor his accomplishments. And I have brought labor peace to the game, as there has never been a game stoppage in the LSWE on my watch. And now, I am proud to introduce instant replay to the LSWE, which will extend each game on and on for days! Yeah, I'll still be commissioner of the LSWE even after my head ends up in a jar.... get used to me, suckas!

Today, I would like to present to you the time honored tradition of Theme Thursday, assembled by one of my famous blue ribbon panels. And it's a promotional date as well, as there will be post-game matching of the songs into pairs! Ah, you can't beat fun at the old internet!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme, 1 point for each correct match...

1. Where you going
What you looking for
You know those boys
Don't want to play no more with you
It's true

2. Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds
Still we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

3. See you're the kinda person
That believes in makin' out once
Love 'em and leave 'em fast

Little Red Corvette - Prince

4. I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In the torn-up town, no post code envy

Royals - Lorde

5. I'm not surprised.
Not everything lasts.
I've broken my heart so many times I stopped keeping track.
Talk myself in.
I talk myself out.
I get all worked up, then I let myself down.

Haven't Met You Yet - Michael Buble

6. I met all the girls and loved myself a few
Ended by surprise
Like everything else I've been through
It opened up my eyes

7. Zephyr in the sky at night I wonder
Do my tears of mourning sink beneath the sun
She's got herself a universe gone quickly
For the call of thunder threatens everyone

8. Well he's tellin' us this
And he's tellin' us that
Changes it every day
Say's it doesn't matter

Rocky Mountain Way - Joe Walsh

9. Cryin' on my pillow
Lonely in my bed
Then I heard a voice beside me
And she softly said

10. You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody's lack of love

Brave - Sara Bareilles

11. My apartment looks upside down from there
Water spirals the wrong way out the sink
And her voice is a backwards record
It's like a whirlpool and it never ends

12. She's a vision form coast to coast (Coast to coast)
Sea to shining sea (Sea to shining sea)
Hey, sister you're the perfect host (Make a toast)

Theme? Major League Baseball teams

Matches?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game, or for four points, name two songs with artist that would be a good match in this game. Earth Angel - The Penguins; Demons - The National

Mecca Bonus: Three of the songs above have been on the Mecca CD. Which numbers? (6 possible points)

5 Point Bonus: Which of the songs above comes from an album that features a possum-like animal on the cover art?

Royals by Lorde

I'm on the laptop 5 minute before leaving, so no time to split up the post into nice bite-sized quotes, but to your points...

-I mean I can't tell the supposed similarities in songs... like the My Sweet Lord/He's So Fine thing. Just can't hear it at all. I know it's because I don't have an ear for musical details, but it frustrates me still when other people can hear something clearly that I can't...

-The funny thing revolved around a certain exploded organ. Twice today I have thought of it again and once broke down into a total laughing fit. It's just one of those things that hits my humor sweet spot, I guess...

-Yes, the name Royals was the inspiration, that was in the article I read. Of course, it still boils down to Brett being the inspiration, which I thought was too cheesy to be true at first...

-I did think of ermine when I was trying to figure out the animal solely because of that painting you had me use as the basis for Fanny VIII!!!

-The Mecca CD was the first time I had ever heard Brave. Don't think I heard it outside of Mecca until just a couple months ago...

A cursory look at the interwebs shows that most people have the same understanding that I do. An EP is more than a single, but less than an album. Most people use LP and album interchangeably, making an EP something different. The only reason I brought this up in the first place is because, having purchased 4 copies of the album last year, I immediately ruled Lorde out, since I knew the album cover was white print on black.

I also think lb was probably referring to his friend and not Lorde herself. My comment was that Aussie animals are way different from Kiwi animals, much more than the difference between L.A. animals and O.C. animals...

So most of the people on the internet don't know the proper definition of a specific word? Shocking! Just because they're wrong doesn't mean I have to be.....

I don't think that the fauna of Australia and New Zealand are way different, but I'm not a zoologist so what the french do I know (apart from the definition of the word album)?

And since I can't directly ask a New Zealander since Lorde isn't a follower of my blog (I am crushed), I'm going to take the next best thing and consult an Aussie. Especially when it comes to a question about marsupials, of which Australia is overflowing with....

Royals - Lorde (This song is almost criminally catchy. And if ESPN writer Jim Caple is to be believed, the title of this song was partially inspired by a picture of former Royals star George Brett Lorde once saw in a magazine...)

Never say never:

I wonder what the over/under is on the number of times they play that song at Kauffman Stadium during the two games I see there next month...
