Holy crap! What a ridiculous WWOQ! If this answer was included in any "news" reports of the contest, it was surely buried deeply inside it.

After Obama finished talking, I got to see the $25K question. Upon reading the transcript, I think I'd ATA on this one-they might have a better idea than I did.

ATE or PaF on $50K.

We'll see what happens tomorrow-and hopefully I'll get to see the entire show without Obama (or anybody else) interrupting me!
I'm just a game show nerd.

Where would the audience have learned this answer? I think their vote would have been hopelessly divided and/or leaning towards a distractor. My WAG would have been Jingle Bells, simply because it had the most familiar chorus.

Okay, I hunted down one of these articles (taking more than the 30 seconds a PAF would have to identify the right search terms) and this one has the answer in the second paragraph.
After the tears (and there were tears), texts and frantic thumb work, Kate Moore, 15 years old, came from behind to win the best-of-three finals round of LG’s U.S. National Texting Championships Tuesday.

Ms. Moore, from Des Moines, Iowa, beat Morgan Dynda, 14 years old, for the $50,000 prize by being first to text an error-free modified chorus from “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.”
http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/06/17/ ... mpionship/

Without a good and fast Google PAF, I still think this was a ridiculously obscure question for $25K.

Okay, I typed Iowa teen song texting contest and did a Google search and here's what I got...

OMG! Iowa teen is national texting champ - ... first stanza of Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, a song from the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, the newspaper says. ...
content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2009/06/...

If I had been Mr. Chan's PAF and he read the question quickly enough, I believe I could have retrieved the answer within the time frame. Before my taping, my PAF honed her "Goggling" skills in case they were needed! I totally agree with you that contestants need to have a PAF with strong Goggle skills. Of course, that's a moot point now! :(

I think that this contestant marks a shift in the types of stacks and questions that M will ask for the season. This type of stack is a lot more like the questions I saw.

Visiting a jazz class in Columbia University, who was once asked by the lecturer to "play some of your weird chords for the class"?

A: Ornette Coleman B: Eric Dolphy
C: Charles Mingus D: Thelonious Monk
I'm good at music trivia but Jazz is not my best area of expertise. I would've double dipped A or C only because I've heard of those two jazz legends. Also I could've sworn I heard a few people in the audience clap when David said Thelonious Monk. I DVR'd todays episode and I played it back a few times and I defnitely think I heard some audience members clap long before he said final answer.

One thing I hate about the "spoiler" questions is that you can figure out how well a contestant is going to do based on the dollar value. When the previous contestant left with $5K it was pretty certain that David would make it to the $50K question.

I could not see Reagan or Bush writing such a frivolous book. Of the other two, Carter is more likely than Ford to have penned something like this.

Same question I had for Kazoo (and for you, in another transcript thread): Is there any reason you'd think the audience would know this?

Maybe if the studio was filled with fifteen-year-olds, that day...

No, but I always go with ATA for middle-tier questions, figuring that the higher the dollar value the lower the reliability of ATA as a lifeline. Given the question ATE isn't going to help much, and I'm sure not going to DD. PAF might come through but as evidenced from other posts this isn't easily Googlable. So start with ATA and maybe I get lucky.

I would have guessed it would have been Jingle Bells, in part because EVERYONE knows Jingle Bells, but also, the other three songs are all, um, politically correct: all are in the minstrel (blackface) tradition, with Camptown Races and Oh, Susanna both being written by Stephen Foster and both including a lot of racially politically incorrect dialect, and Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah is from a Disney film ('Song of the South') based on the Uncle Remus stories that Disney itself has never released to home video in the US out of concern that people would be offended by it.
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

I had no idea but guessed correctly Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah only because the Z and the full chorus made it seem that it had the most unique letters of the 4 (like the classic 'The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs') - I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger in the HS if I had no other lifelines. Congrats to David for taking the chance and getting it.

That political incorrectness was also on my mind. The blog entry I linked to, earlier in the thread, said they used a "modified chorus" but it didn't explain what the modification was.

In June 2009, an Iowa teen was named the nation's top texter after texting the chorus to what song the fastest?

A: Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah B: Jingle Bells
C: Camptown Races D: Oh, Susanna
I would have guessed it would have been Jingle Bells, in part because EVERYONE knows Jingle Bells, but also, the other three songs are all, um, politically correct: all are in the minstrel (blackface) tradition, with Camptown Races and Oh, Susanna both being written by Stephen Foster and both including a lot of racially politically incorrect dialect, and Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah is from a Disney film ('Song of the South') based on the Uncle Remus stories that Disney itself has never released to home video in the US out of concern that people would be offended by it.
That's similar to my reasoning. I read a news story about a similar contest a few years ago, and IIRC the required text was something with a lot of punctuation, to make it more challenging. Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah has lots of hyphens, commas, and exclamation points. I probably would have Double-Dipped on this question, assuming, as we have to from now on, that there was no PAF. I would have ruled out Camptown Races, since the dialect ("gwine to run all night, gwine to run all day") would be kind of unfair to throw at teenagers. I'm not sure what I would have picked as my second choice. Thankfully, I wouldn't have had to decide.
