Where would the audience have learned this answer? I think their vote would have been hopelessly divided and/or leaning towards a distractor. My WAG would have been Jingle Bells, simply because it had the most familiar chorus.

If I had been Mr. Chan's PAF and he read the question quickly enough, I believe I could have retrieved the answer within the time frame. Before my taping, my PAF honed her "Goggling" skills in case they were needed! I totally agree with you that contestants need to have a PAF with strong Goggle skills. Of course, that's a moot point now!

I'm good at music trivia but Jazz is not my best area of expertise. I would've double dipped A or C only because I've heard of those two jazz legends. Also I could've sworn I heard a few people in the audience clap when David said Thelonious Monk. I DVR'd todays episode and I played it back a few times and I defnitely think I heard some audience members clap long before he said final answer.

One thing I hate about the "spoiler" questions is that you can figure out how well a contestant is going to do based on the dollar value. When the previous contestant left with $5K it was pretty certain that David would make it to the $50K question.

No, but I always go with ATA for middle-tier questions, figuring that the higher the dollar value the lower the reliability of ATA as a lifeline. Given the question ATE isn't going to help much, and I'm sure not going to DD. PAF might come through but as evidenced from other posts this isn't easily Googlable. So start with ATA and maybe I get lucky.

That political incorrectness was also on my mind. The blog entry I linked to, earlier in the thread, said they used a "modified chorus" but it didn't explain what the modification was.

That's similar to my reasoning. I read a news story about a similar contest a few years ago, and IIRC the required text was something with a lot of punctuation, to make it more challenging. Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah has lots of hyphens, commas, and exclamation points. I probably would have Double-Dipped on this question, assuming, as we have to from now on, that there was no PAF. I would have ruled out Camptown Races, since the dialect ("gwine to run all night, gwine to run all day") would be kind of unfair to throw at teenagers. I'm not sure what I would have picked as my second choice. Thankfully, I wouldn't have had to decide.
