Keep in mind that it may or may not be the actual movie that they saw on their first date (or they may not have seen a movie on that first date). It is what they have said that they saw, at least since late 2007. It may be true, it may not be true. I certainly was not there.

(From what I have read, it was quite the first date. Art Museum, drinks, movie, and ice cream, where they shared their first kiss. )

Leah knew "Do the Right Thing" immediately.

There was an article about it in The Root in June. Now, I read The Root and I missed it. Leah only skims it occasionally, but somehow that stuck in her head.

But we all knew Flava Flav was a heckuva lot older than the rest of those guys

Well reasoned, except:

- Public Enemy and NWA (Niggaz with Attitudes) were both huge hip hop groups of the mid-late 1980s.

- Flava Flav was in Public Enemy.

- Ice Cube was in NWA.
Public Enemy was started in the early 80s. They had at least a 5 year jump on NWA.

IIRC, "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" was their debut album in 1987.

NWA also debuted in 1987 with "NWA and the Posse".

I do not know when Odyssey was in high school.

I didn't say their first album was in the early 80s, I said the group was started in the early 80s, which would reasonably explain why the members of Public Enemy are older.

All the movies at the local theatres were too violent, so SteelersFan took me to a free showing of some old western movie -- Tie a Yellow Ribbon, or something.

Sleepers was horrific. I'm really glad I saw it at home so I could fast foward through the horrible parts.

I learned this answer during the ignauguaration broadcasts--it was repeated by at least three networks----I'm sure Sam Donaldson would have known this so soon after the campaign--was severely questioning contestants choice of life-lines and then he choices the white corn bread movie as his first choice--just another example of a white contestant flaming out on a black question which happened quite alot in da old days--why in da world would a young African -american couple go see When Harry met Sally when those three other movies were there to be seen--especially two young social activists--had I needed the double dip--Glory and Do th eRight Thing would have made much better choices given the couple

Because maybe they would have wanted to see a rom-com / date movie, since, after all, they were on a date . . . or maybe they were in the mood for a comedy. I don't know why you would assume that a couple would only want to see a movie that can be characterized as "of their race or ethnic group."

Put it this way- we are relying on what Obama SAID the first movie was.

Remember- politicians are almost always in campaign mode- just about everything they say...even when relating a personal anecdote...is scripted

For sure. My weakness watching Millionaire has always been questions asking about lyrics from songs or advertising slogans from the '70s or '80s. There isn't really a way for a young person such as myself to study stuff like that. On the other hand, I can easily read up on classic movies and books from stuff like AFI lists, bestseller lists, etc. I don't feel like I'm ignorant for not knowing the stuff that I mentioned before, just unlucky.

And even the "freshness" of those names that you mentioned, Estonut, these days pale in comparison to the likes of names like The Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and, yes, Hayden Panettiere (IIRC, there was more than one person in chat last night who chimed in with a "Who's that?" when her name was read).
In this town, don't we love it now, everbody's waiting for the next surprise!

Would have had all 4 lifelines going into the WWWOQ. (I like things wacky and wicked!).

Probably would have gone with Sam Donaldson first, since he's a Washington reporter. Other lifelines as necessary.

This Bored's chat?

I find that hard to believe, what with the love for Heroes many Bored people have.

Or maybe our Bored Buddies like Heroes, but don't know that Hayden Panettiere is a star on it?

I knew the FF but hesitated at home with the order of the 1st 2 so would not have won.

So, the 16K rap Q:

Despite having gotten wrong one of those phone game Qs about "when was their 1st release" with a rapper who wound up having their real 1st release, according to Google, be a 4-song thing for their friends in the 80s, with said rapper probably being Flav, I still wasn't sure of the answer to this. But I had it boiled down to JZ & Flav. So would have double dipped.

50K Q:

Did not know. ATA; if they don't know, PAF a googler.
