Sounds like something hosted by Leonard Pynth-Garnell (sp?--old Saturday Night Live character played by Dan Ackroyd).

Okay without getting too personal here and naming names -- I don't see how anyone who's been around here any decent amount of time could REALLY think this is "good news" --- for people who repeatedly have been rejected as contestants after in-person auditions.

It is interesting to me (but not at all surprising) that -- as someone else pointed out earlier in the thread --- most of the people calling it good news are people who have already been on the show.

To reiterate: ANY form of video selection, in-person selection, or even modified version of the phone game that considers age/gender/race/geography -- is NOT in the original spirit of the game, as the abc.com page about Millionaire indicates the PT return will be.

I am curious, though, if the vids will be used to troll for contestants for both shows. Right now, the info is only on the syndie page -- with the proviso that future eligibility info for the PT shows will be posted at a later date. I guess we'll see.

gsn,

The way I read it on the original link was that this is for the PT game, but you remain in the syndie pool for two years if you are not selected for Reege.

I can certainly display the perkitude, but my voice sounds horrible in audio (uber nasally). Regardless, I think I'm going to try and do this.

And, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but there is the risk that a person could google during the online test. So, double threat that an unqualified person could get through.

That can be fixed in post-production. You could even hire Harry Shearer to dub in a likable and amusing voice. The possibilities are limited only by one's imagination.

Ah thank you Jurisdoctor!
I never clicked on the link but I rather saw it at Milloinairetv.com and then came here to see what people posted about it. The prupose of the video selection process is not as explicit there -- but clearly Goongas' link will show up there soon.

Too bad.

The only other thing I take from reading that link, though, is that they are making calls over a two-day period. I wonder if they will fill all 11 shows over those 2 days?

gsn is absolutely right, except for his last paragraph. It seems pretty clear that this method will only be used to select contestants for the Regis show. It states, "Producer will select entrants from Pool to receive an Eligibility Call. Those who complete the call and meet all eligibility requirements will be declared Finalists and travel to New York City with a friend for the opportunity to play for a chance to sit in the hot seat on network episodes of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire ("Program") with Regis Philbin." Then there's a footnote that states, "Those persons not selected from the [video submission/online test] Pool will remain eligible for two (2) years for possible selection for future episodes of the network program (subject to change) or episodes of the syndicated program at producer's sole discretion."

That's interesting, suggesting that there may be "future episodes of the network program" after this August.

But then again, what does it matter if all of those episodes too will be "cast," just like any "reality show," via either auditions or video submission? The most that can be said for this exciting new qualification method is that it doesn't suck as much as in-person auditions, given the ability to rehearse and edit (well, those of us who lack professional video equipment, and are relegated to the video-shooting functions on our point-and-shoot digital cameras, won't even have editing capabilities). But the idea that anyone, anywhere, had a legitimate chance to get on just by answering a few questions, is gone forever. And I'm not afraid to be a "gloomy gus" and acknowledge these truths.

Any contest that doesn't administer an in-person test but expects skills gets what they deserve.

Beloved PTBAM did administer an in-person test of sorts, & while not equivalent to the show format questions, it certainly was equivalent to some of the phone game questions; it was called the "Fastest Finger" round.

I sincerely hope the producers for this get absolutely flooded with youtubeish videos. Most of whom they'll want to book I'm sure, but I hope the flood will be at least whelming.

Clyde, most digital (photo) cameras these days have a "video capture" mode. That makes borrowing one much easier. Does your school have a camera you could use for a day? I doubt if the video quality means as much as the content of the clip. Sure, some will surely get in with LAVISH video productions, but I'd hope they don't dismiss a clip based on technical quality alone.

It will still be called the "Fastest Finger" round when they do it again during these PT episodes, so what is the freakin difference??? Do you pay attention to anything that is going on with this show (in reality)??? If not, you should really stop with the discouraging comments...other people might be excited and might want to audition without all the negativity and false statements...

Huh...yet when you type it into their search, it says it's not a word. Good find!!!

I guess I didn't make it up for real, but I made it up in my mind since I had not heard it before.
Shallah claims her word is a verb. I credit Sunflower with the noun. Besides, Shallah is Canadian, and I don't think the word has permeated the border...

Perhaps I should aim higher than that $15.00 disposable CVS movie cam. Lotta good it would do me, but still.
I suspect it would be VERY expensive to rent a camera that comes with an attitude filter...

I have to agree with Bob Juch and Hbomb, this video selection process seems to mean no phone game--hopefully we are wrong--but I doubt it--what a disappointment

I guess that depends on the person and why they think they were not selected.

What if a person has great stories but gets really nervous in interviews and could not get their thoughts across....or maybe they were tired or sick or preoccupied with other issues. Maybe said person will be excited about this method, in that they will be able to practice and get their stories out in the best way possible. Maybe that person does not feel they are rejected based on their entire personality, but based on a 2 minute segment of their life where they may not have performed as well as they wanted to. Maybe we should be more encouraging of these people and not shit on their parade. Maybe?

Exactly what or who determines whether a person is qualified? I thought if they were an American citizen over the age of 18, they were qualified.

So if a PAF googles, are they also unqualified? Anybody who can google fast enough and well enough to be able to get the answers at the same time they're taking the online test is probably overqualified.

Besides, if googling answers makes one unqualified, there then are a lot of unqualified people on this board.

Now there are so many unqualifieds and qualifieds here that they are doing that thing where they look and sound weird and have ceased to be words. Ha!
Screw you guys, I'm going home.

Most contestants also need to be able to pass the written qualifying test. In the old days, they had to pass a couple of iterations of the phone game.

When they've departed from that requirement [subliminal]Walk in and Win![/subliminal], the results have often not been pretty. Even by comparison to some of the "normal" contestants who have elicited groans from most of us. Remember the woman who walked with $300 (and would have guessed wrong on her $500 question)? --Bob

I dunno. I would feel better if it was reversed. Take the online test first, then do the video audition.

OK, here's my 2 cent's worth on this one.

I am glad J! doesn't make you send in anything before you take the online test-if they did, I wouldn't be taking it-I don't know anybody that owns a video camera.

I think they are using the videos to hand-pick the people that will be "good TV", meaning they will have sparkly personalities and/or a "hook" that would get the APs to pick them-assuming they pass the online test.

I wonder how many people will reach the top tier questions during the 2 week run in August.

I think that if they're gonna have an online test-they should make it available to ANYBODY that is interested in being a contestant. It works for J! quite well.
I'm just a game show nerd.

Not sure if anyone posted about this yet, but on the millionairetv website, they now have a link to the network game rules, as well as the syndicated game rules. Unfortunately both currently take you to the syndi rules. I'm guessing they will get this fixed soon and it will answer all of our questions once and for all about whether there is any possibility of the phone game returning.

Hey if someone wants to google during the online test, that's their choice. I, however, wouldn't want to get on a game show by looking up the answers and look like a complete idiot on camera. I always wonder, when I watch if the people that miss one of the first few questions, if they are just nervous or maybe they cheated off their trivia savvy friends test and then got lucky enough to pass the interview.
