Famous Ancestors

I just found out that I am a direct descendent of Robert the Bruce.

I think that makes me a cousin of BobJuch's

Yes you are! He's my 21st great-grand uncle.

His first wife, Isabel de Clare, is the daughter of Gilbert, my 22nd great-grandfather.

If that's so, unless Cal is a descendant of Isabel's, you're only related by marriage. :)

Seeing how Bruce had no children by his second wife, Christina de Ireby, if he's descended from Bruce, it's through Isabel.

Also, I expect Cal actually meant the Robert Bruce who was the grandson of the one I was discussing. He's the one depicted in Braveheart. There were many generations of Robert Bruces. Robert I, King of Scots (11 July 1274 – 7 June 1329) is my 21st great-grand uncle as his wife, Elizabeth de Burgh was the daughter of Richard Óg de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, my 22nd great-grandfather.

Of course that means he's descended from the previous Robert Bruces as well.

I meant Robert I, King of Scots (in History classes, he is the ONLY one referred to as Robert the Bruce).

Yes, it is through Isabel.

And he's actually my 23xGreat Grandfather. I typed it wrong before.

I descend from Robert the Bruce and Isabel Mar (that's how it is listed on our family tree at ancestry.com).

I can see now that we were talking past each other because of the variation of Isabel/Isabella. Both versions are used.

Jane Yolen wrote a book called Girl in A Cage which is a fictional telling of Marjorie Bruce's life. It was one of Maddie's favorite books when she was younger.

I'm a little short on first cousins too. My mother was an only child. My father was his mother's only child. My paternal Grandfather was 55 when my father was born. My father had 5 half siblings all of whom where considerably older than him, he was already an uncle when he was born.
