Well, it seems like the issue already is dead.

McCain did not make the statement (unlike Gore), and he already laughed and dismissed the contention by another person.

If they do not agree with the previous perception, then they are ignored. Look at what has and has not stuck to Obama/Biden/McCain/Palin/Clinton and you can see it play out.
