I'm reasonably sure that all of us soon will have to stop speaking English entirely, when it's determined that no remaining words remain inoffensive to somebody.
And yet every day on the subway and at school I hear people swearing so badly I feel guilty being around them and nobody says a word about it. Believe me, I'm no prude but wouldn't it be ironically sad if those were the only inoffensive words left....<sigh>

The Irish certainly aren't British, but the Scots and Welsh are. Of course, "to welsh" is also a pejorative term.

Furthermore, any reference to "taffy," including the sticky candy, is deemed a low insult to many citizens of Wales.

This comes from an old poem that begins, "Taffy was a Welshman, Taffy was a thief."

Jesus in a jumpsuit, what a mess! I'm not sure where to begin, so I guess I'll just start with this:

Seventy-some replies and nobody has yet explained how it's quicker and less complicated to say Renaissance and Radiance instead of Michelle and Sasha!

Whoops, sorry. I hadn't seen this before I posted. I'll refrain from any further posting, unless Cal specifically wants me explain the parenthetical.

I also want to give a shout out to those participants who actually got what I was trying to say. Mini and Rexer, especially, were on target with that.

That is the slur I am familiar with too. I think I hear the long version used around here more often than the shorter one....

Of course, I never once equated the slur "jig" with the phrase "the jig is up" the same way I would not expect someone to be offended if I said I was going to go coon hunting (Not that I ever would, ES would kill me). I don't know the origins of the phrase "the jig is up" without actually looking it up, but I've always assumed it was just a way of saying "the game is up"....
