I'm reasonably sure that all of us soon will have to stop speaking English entirely, when it's determined that no remaining words remain inoffensive to somebody.

And yet every day on the subway and at school I hear people swearing so badly I feel guilty being around them and nobody says a word about it. Believe me, I'm no prude but wouldn't it be ironically sad if those were the only inoffensive words left....<sigh>

The Irish certainly aren't British, but the Scots and Welsh are. Of course, "to welsh" is also a pejorative term.

I don't know why I am compelled to enlarge this thread, but in these parts, "jig" in reference to a person with a Black African heritage would be offensive. I think this it is a shortening of "jigaboo", which actually hurts me to type.

That is the slur I am familiar with too. I think I hear the long version used around here more often than the shorter one....

Of course, I never once equated the slur "jig" with the phrase "the jig is up" the same way I would not expect someone to be offended if I said I was going to go coon hunting (Not that I ever would, ES would kill me). I don't know the origins of the phrase "the jig is up" without actually looking it up, but I've always assumed it was just a way of saying "the game is up"....
