I don't think Drew is trying to rachet up the excitement. I watched one recently and his opinion was listened to and it cost her the game. I expected that to have an affect on his for the next guy...... it didn't.
On other shows, I think that the hosts are trying to egg the contestants on because they know that going for big money, whether they win or lose, leads to better ratings than quitting with a smaller amount.
I admit I haven't seen much of Drew on Price is Right, so I can't comment on his style there, but on Power of 10, he just seems to want to point out both sides of the argument so the contestant appreciates the choices and risk involved.
