I'm from Kentucky and it was a culture shock to move here and realize no one
goes to basketball games!! We got out of school in Louisville so we could attend the state
basketball tournaments.

That's how it is with football in Nebraska! I remember when my brother first moved out there and we went to visit for the first time. He lives in a town of like 800 but the high school team are perpetual champions of something or other. We hit town and there wasn't a soul to be seen. Because the entire town was off to wherever the football game was being played. My high school gym in Indiana held about 4,000 people. It wasn't always full but it was most of the time. That was for a high school of about 1,000 students. There was a game here last night. I bet there were tens of people there!
More were at the holiday party down the street, I'm afraid (me too!).

My wife was a bit shocked to see how important high school football (and basketball to a lesser degree) is in a small town. She came from a high school in Kansas where her graduating class was well over 500 students, IIRC. When Tom Osborne himself came to recruit the Kelsay boys, well, you would have thought that Jesus Christ himself had chosen Auburn, NE as his place of return.
