More people tuned in to watch McCain's acceptance speech than Obama's.

EDIT: I looked at the article again. It doesn't say that there were more viewers. Just that it got a higher rating. I think that will translate to more viewers, but I believe it is possible to have a higher rating with fewer viewers.

Nielsen ratings are stated in terms of rating/share. "Rating" is the percentage of TVs in the US which are tuned to a particular program. "Share" is the percentage of TVs in use at that time which are tuned to a particular program.

This is, of course, an inexact science, since some people start to watch things, and then stop in the middle (notice the big lead-in for McCain's speech on NBC, then the lower overall number later).

Another source, just quoting total viewers said Obama got about 38 million, Palin got about 37.2 million, and I haven't seen that number for McCain yet.

Each of these are, by the way, better numbers than the opening ceremonies of the Olympics or the finale of American Idol. Which I find encouraging.
I am about 25% sure of this.

Then there are people like me, who can't pick what to watch so I have the DVR recording 2 programs while I'm watching a third. So someone like me would either skew it (if it's counting all 3) or some of the stuff wouldn't be counted at all.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
