SEismic activity

#1 Post by gsabc » Thu Sep 04, 2008 7:27 am

From possible blasting around my house. One of the increased costs of our town sewer project was the discovery of significant rock table higher in the ground than expected. I've already seen those recycled-tire coverings in the staging area nearby. Glad I'm not going to be home when they do it. The cats will freak out.

Apparently, the town has contracted with an expert in the field, PreSeis, which will come to the house and check it out for potential issues. We've gotten several phone calls and there's a certified letter from them waiting at the PO for us. Don't know what they can do about it if they find that your house will shake too severely or something like that. I already plan to take down the painting on glass that is a family heirloom and hangs above our fireplace. The other paintings may have to come down for a bit, too. We already have plaster cracks from general house settling.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

PreSeis! What an original and clever name. :)

Strap your water heater -- lots of instructions on the web. Or have PreSeis do it for you, if possible.

It turned out that it's a CYA issue for the town. They're going into houses and taking photos of all the cracks in the walls that already exist. Sorta like the walkaround they do for a rental car, looking for preexisting dents and scratches. This way, you can't blame the town for old damage. Not something I would have even thought of doing, but I'm sure someone else would have or already has.
