That's what liberals have been saying all along!
According to several Republican delegates interviewed on NPR this morning, we shouldn't judge Sarah Palin on the fact that her teenage daughter is pregnant. It doesn't matter what kind of mother she is, teen agers will do what teenagers will do. Nothing you can do will really stop them.
THAT'S WHY LIBERALS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABSTINENCE ONLY SEX ED PROGRAMS DON'T WORK!!!!!
God forbid we provide the means or at the very least the information to teenagers to prevent pregnancies just such as this. I don't think this in the least bit reflects on Palin's fitness to govern, but I think the discussion surrounding it reveals a great deal of hypocrisy in conservative approaches to sex ed.

Its not so much the content of the 'sex education' as it is the instructor. Most conservative folks, and others who care about their children, will have the conversations about protection, along with the abstinence preaching.kroxquo wrote:According to several Republican delegates interviewed on NPR this morning, we shouldn't judge Sarah Palin on the fact that her teenage daughter is pregnant. What we don't want is some bureaucrat teaching them because they may not emphasize the points we want emphasized.
To me it is like teaching the Bible in school. I don't want it taught in my public schools, primarily because it likely wouldn't be taught the way I would want it taught. And if it was, the the Catholics, Methodists, and Lutherans wouldn't be happy.

You need better friends. Or your friends need to be better parents. You should call them out on it.dimmzy wrote:Not really. Most of my friends confess they haven't REALLY had the talk. My kids favaorite line of mine when they ask "Why can't I go to see [insert most PG-13/R movie], everybody else gets to go see it?"?
Because I love you more than their parents love them.
My kids get it.

Surprise, surprise, not how I would answer that question.BackInTex wrote:You need better friends. Or your friends need to be better parents. You should call them out on it.dimmzy wrote:Not really. I would say "Because we have different values than those parents do and that movie is not appropriate for you to see. The end."
My dad used to tell me to go live with those families.

One's a single mother. It's all she can do to work 8 - 4:30 in public school as a library aide for $10/hour and then go to her night job at the convenience store 2 nights a week. She doesn't get child support. Her teen daughters are resentful that they don't have the advantages that their well-off friends have and badmouth her to their friends' parents. As she said, "If I get through the day without blowing my brains out or having them call me a worthless slacker, it's a good day."You need better friends. Or your friends need to be better parents. You should call them out on it.
Another has a stepdaughter (mom's not in the picture). She says her stepdaughter hates her for bringing discipline back to the family and hasn't talked to her in weeks.
Another is a single father. He says he's embarrassed to talk about sex with his daughter and she's embarrassed and says, "Dad, I know all about it! Don't worry, I won't get pregnant!"
I think single parents have a more difficult time and sadly, more and more children are growing up in homes like this. It's difficult to say, call them out on it when life is so tough for them to begin with ...

It sounds as if they have lost the respect of their kids. That is tough thing to get back (the step mom may have never had it to begin with). But they'll never get it by giving up, saying 'whoa is me'.dimmzy wrote:One's a single mother. Life is tough, yes, tougher for some than others, but at every fork in the road is a decision and one direction is better than the other, and one direction it tougher than the other. And usually the better and tougher directions are the same. It is a matter of priorities and commitment.
I have a lot of respect for single parents who give their all. And I commit a lot of my time (as does my wife) to supporting their kids activities where they can not (church, PTO, girl scouts, boy scouts, volleyball coach, swim team, etc.).
As far as the father is concerned, how 'embarassed' will he be when his daughter comes home with an STD, or pregnant, or date rapped? He needs to get over his embarassment or perhaps lean on a trusted female friend. His daughter should be far too important to him to just let it go.
Yeah, I know. Easy for me to say.

Well, the reality is that most teenage girls DON'T get pregnant and DON"T get STDs regardless of whether their parents talked to them.As far as the father is concerned, how 'embarassed' will he be when his daughter comes home with an STD, or pregnant, or date rapped?
I'm still waiting for my mother to give me The Talk.

Mothers #1 and #2 are at a real risk their daughters will intentionally get pregnant so they will be able to leave the house.dimmzy wrote:One's a single mother. Mom #1's daughter was valedictorian and got a full ride to Cornell. Daughter #2 is on The Pill because she's in track and doesn't want her period. (Mom won't let her date until she's 16)Mothers #1 and #2 are at a real risk their daughters will intentionally get pregnant so they will be able to leave the house.

I asked my mother what oral sex was when I was about nine or ten. She told me that oral sex is when you talk about sex.dimmzy wrote:Well, the reality is that most teenage girls DON'T get pregnant and DON"T get STDs regardless of whether their parents talked to them.As far as the father is concerned, how 'embarassed' will he be when his daughter comes home with an STD, or pregnant, or date rapped?

My girls always say that the didn't need to have the talk because we have rabbits. Still, they know what happens. I told them that I would be disappointed if they had sex at an early age, but I would take them out to get the pill and condoms.
We also had a chat with their pediatrician, when we were taking about the Gardisil vaccice (which I did not get for them) and I told her that the girls had my permission to go to her if they felt uncomfortable going to me.
Personally, I think that the movie Juno had a huge impact on them. They know that teenagers get prengant and have to live with the consequences.
