That two local quizmeisters will be guaranteed at least $1,000 when they climb aboard the “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” hot seat while the show celebrates its 1,000th episode. Harry Pappas, an 80-year-old retired anesthesiologist from West Boylston, will get his shot at a million bucks tomorrow. Mike Oliver, a 30-year-old youth counselor from Barre, will go head-to-head with Meredith Vieira Friday. “Millionaire” airs at 12:30 p.m. weekdays on Channel 5.

Wow! An 80-year-old contestant? That might be a record on this show!

Kinda stretches what I think of as the Boston area, and I grew up here. Neither would be considered suburbs of the city; more like suburbs of Worcester (~40 miles west), and part of "eastern Massachusetts". I guess you take your locals where you can.

Whaddaya expect, it's the Herald, the Boston equivalent to the NY Daily News, constant second fiddle to the Globe and always willing to go to extremes to get sales. If printing the names of the contestants in the paper and calling them "locals" sells a few more copies out beyond the great circle highways of Route 128 and I-495, hey, let's do it.

At least TPTB found that mysterious land called "New England" that doesn't show up anywhere on their map. And twice in the same week!

Worcester is considered a suburb of Boston - at least by those who commute between the two.

Only in the commuting sense does the Census Bureau consider Worcester in the Boston area, as the Boston-Worcester-Manchester MA-RI-NH Combined Statistical Area. I rather doubt that Worcester residents consider themselves to be suburban Bostonians. Nor would they want to.

Years ago, I heard a new DJ thank one of her colleagues for giving her a pronunciation key for the local towns.

Dedham (Ded-em), Stoneham (Stone-em), but Framingham (Framing-ham).

Quincy (Kwin-zee), but John Quincy (Kwin-see) Adams.

Leominster (Leh-min-ster), Leicester (Leh-ster), and everyone's favorite, Athol (Watch it, bub! Aa-thawl, with an 'a' as in 'cat' to start)
