Answers and Points Timeline, Game 2 Tuesday Sept 2

#1 Post by Here's Fanny! » Tue Sep 02, 2008 6:50 am

Note: On the rules, I said each game would be open until noon the next day or when I posted the new game, whichever came first. I meant that the opposite way. All games will be open until noon the following day, longer if I haven’t posted the next game yet. I’ll update my previous post as well (although nobody reads the rules posts…..ha!)

Timeline - September 2

“Heads Are Gonna Roll!”

Guess what today is? National Beheading Day! I know, wtf? Not sure what nation that is, but it gives me an excuse for a gory Timeline, so why not? Ha!

Given the nature of today’s subject this will obviously be heavy on England in the 1500 and 1600s. Perhaps surprising that I only have one French one, but most of their noteworthy chops were within too short a span of years to really be fair. So today we introduce two more Timeline elements, the Well and the Bogies.

The Well is a list of the correct years for all the questions, you just have to pick which one goes with which. But wait!, you might say, there are 10 questions but 14 dates in the Well! Why yes, you didn’t expect it to be that easy, did you? There are four “bogies”, (no, I have no idea why they are called that, you’d have to ask Vandal) which are red herring dates that don’t figure into the game. And, since this is a little more involved than a normal Tuesday game would be (but I had to take advantage of NBD!), I’ll still give a couple of Freebies (hints), too.

For today, copying the questions into your answer is optional, but helpful. So your (spoiled) answer would read:

1. Blah, blah, blah

Holofernes, 850433 BC

Followed by the bonus question and your bogie guesses.

And with all the questions and other accoutrements, this post is going to be way too long, so I’ll put the actual game in the next post. And, no, I don't know the rule for setting off titles of movies v. books v. whatever. And I don't care, just be happy I set them off at all. Ha!

Update: I have on good authority (the Great and Powerful V himself), that bogie is short for "bogus answer", so there goes my 'I don't know nothing 'bout no golf' excuse.

Bonus: The Emmy-winning daughter of the actress in #9 is the star of what current long running television series?

I believe the concept of bogies originated with ging and the October 2001 Timeline (Who can forget Barney Bonds and America's Cup Winner Tiger Woods?). It's probably in my Bored history summary from that month if I weren't too lazy to go look it up....

Hargaity in Law and Order SVU
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

That's because I'm a dumbass as well as a dyslexic. It's supposed to be two centuries three times, not three decades three times. I really need to start typing these things in advance instead of just going off the notebook and typing what I think, not what I see. Ha!

Thanks for pointing that out, I'll change the original, although with the way the dates are, I don't think it will matter much other than not make people spend time trying to make it work.

Clarification for those who have yet to take it - I've already submitted but I'm wondering what is really being asked on this one:
4. The Fritz Lang movie “M” was loosely based on this German serial killer known as The Vampire of Dusseldorf.
Are you asking for the year of the death of the German Serial Killer or the year of the movie 'M' - I assumed it was the former, but in reviewing other responses, I'm now thinking you were asking for the year of the movie - but that doesn't seem to fit for all the other questions (the year of their death not the year of the reference to them).

Can you clear this up as to what you are looking for here or is that unfair to us who took the quiz already by giving additional info to those who have yet to take it?

Thanks,

---Jay

Referencing the movie was just a descriptor to help identify the person, which was the purpose of the clues themselves. All of the dates are of the actual beheading (which, in all cases but one, is the date of death).
Spoiler
There is only one date given that is remotely close to either the execution OR the movie so, no matter which way it's read, I don't think it really matters.
Spoiler
I'm darned good and ready.

Thanks, given I know the approximate date of the movie and I was down to two choices on the date of death for who it was based on, I was wondering if it was based on a recent case or one in the last 50 or so years - but if those two were in the same time frame, it seems I picked the wrong one.

1. More a victim of circumstances and machinations than anything else, she was executed after a nine day reign as Queen of England.

Lady Jane Grey, died 1554 (I had though it was 1553, the same year as Edward VI, but you don't have that, so it must be 1554

2. This journalist’s widow Mariane, wrote the best-selling memoir A Mighty Heart, which was then adapted into a movie starring Angelina Jolie.

Didn't read the book or see the movie, but it sounds like Daniel Perle, who was murdered in 2002

3. Considered responsible for the beheading of Charles I, this leader of the Roundheads was himself beheaded by Charles II. Although he had to be exhumed to do it, since he’d died six years earlier (the date is the beheading, not his death).

Ollie Cromwell, I though he died in 1658, but the only date that works for when he was beheaded is 1661, so he must have died in 1655

4. The Fritz Lang movie “M” was loosely based on this German serial killer known as The Vampire of Dusseldorf.

NAC, but based upon when the movie came out, and the clue about at least two centuries having at least three deaths, it must be 1931

5. Spanish conquistador credit with the discovery of the Pacific Ocean.

Balboa, died 1519

6. Father of Jennifer Jason Leigh, his death was a result of an accident on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Vic Morrow, who survived about five seasons of Combat, but died 1982

7. This French heroine was guillotined at the age of 24 for the bathtub assassination of Jacobin Jean-Paul Marat.

Charlotte Corday, died with a gazillion other Crapauds in 1793

8. Wife of Henry VIII known as ‘the rose without a thorn”, her bloom must’ve worn off pretty quick, as she went from the altar to the block in about 18 months.

Boleyn lasted longer, so this must be Catherine Howard, died 1542

9. Contrary to popular belief, this actress (known as “The Poor Man’s Marilyn“) was not decapitated in the car accident that took her life, although the truth is just about as bad (if not worse).

Sounds like Jayne Mansfield, whose daughter, Mariska Hargitay, is really hot. Jayne died 1967

10. English poet and explorer who was knighted by Elizabeth I in 1585 and beheaded under the rule of James I.

Sounds like Wally Raleigh, who died 1618

Bonus: The Emmy-winning daughter of the actress in #9 is the star of what current long running television series?
