Del Martin

#1 Post by Here's Fanny! » Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:14 am

I just found out today that Del Martin passed away last Wednesday. I'm surprised there hasn't been any news about it, but I don't get the paper and don't watch a lot of the news on tv, so I basically only see stuff if it's on web headlines (or here). I

For those who don't know, she and her partner Phyllis Lyon were major lesbian activists from way back in the 50s and did some pretty incredible work, especially given the circumstances and odds against them that were in place when they started.

In June they were the first same sex couple to be married in California since the law was repealed earlier this year. It's sad that their marriage was short lived, but they had a lot of great years together and I'm glad that Del was able to die a married woman. I also hope that Phyllis receives any survivor benefits to which she's entitled.

I didn't put the RIP in the subject because I didn't want to invite assy comments, given that people are all warmed up from the folderol in the recent political threads. Because nothing invites folderol like religion, politics and sex. And this has all shades of all three.
Spoiler
I'm darned good and ready.
