We're still at........$4.05. I don't mean to sound like I'm complaining, because I'm not. I am actually quite happy that I'm not living in Alaska right now. That's the first time I've ever been happy about that! Things are spendy there.

We aren't going down either. Still 3.77 in most places (saw one 3.75 and a couple 3.79 when I was out yesterday).

I can't believe Denver is so much cheaper (re: Ed's post), usually they're about 5 cents higher than here.

The vast majority of all vehicles are not compatible with E85 fuel. You may be thinking of the 85 octane rating that you may see on gas pumps. Typical octane ratings on mainstream gasoline pumps might be in the 85 to 93 range.

I am no longer confused (except I didn't know I was in the first place, ha!). I know we have ethanol in the gas and I know there is an 85 on the pumps. And I know my gas mileage sucks. Ergo,

Most pumps hereabouts read from 87 to 91 octane.

The E85 pumps, around here, state that the octane is 100. Sounds good until you check your mileage, which may of course vary...

As summer vacation season kicked in, Americans got out of their cars, driving 12.2 billion fewer miles in June than the same month a year earlier.

The 4.7 percent decline, which came while gas prices were peaking, was the biggest monthly driving drop in a downward trend that began in November, the Federal Highway Administration said Wednesday.

"Clearly, more Americans chose to stay close to home in June than in previous years," said Transportation Secretary Mary Peters.

Overall, Americans drove 53.2 billion fewer miles November through June than they did over the same eight-month period a year earlier, according to the highway agency's latest monthly report on driving. That's a larger decline than the 49.3 billion fewer miles driven by Americans over the entire decade of the 1970s, a period marked by oil embargoes and gas lines, the agency said.

The June drop of 12.2 billion follows the May drop of 10 billion. Most of the drop was in rural driving which went down over 4%. Urban driving was only down about 1%.

Also from the article:

Gas consumption was down, too. The highway administration said motorists consumed 400 million fewer gallons of gasoline and 318 million fewer gallons of diesel in the first quarter of 2008 than in the same period in 2007.

Which means a lot less tax money for the highway fund.

I paid $3.31 here in Houston on Saturday, August 30. That was on Labor Day weekend with a hurricane in the western Gulf. There are reports of $3.20s around town today.

I'm expecting $2.something soon.

As I said in a different thread, we made it to 3.59 a few weeks ago and there it has stayed.

Re: the 2 something. A while back all the car dealers were promoting 2.99 a gallon gas for a year if you bought their vehicle. I remarked to someon at the time that it would be really funny if gas went below that. Ha!

You are right - that's not true everywhere. It usually is though, and I recently went to a gas station (I think it was a Mobil? Or a Sunoco?) and 89 octane had a green handle and I thoroughly freaked myself out that I was actually putting diesel in my car instead of regular 89 gas...I'm just so used to diesel being green!

You are right - that's not true everywhere. It usually is though, and I recently went to a gas station (I think it was a Mobil? Or a Sunoco?) and 89 octane had a green handle and I thoroughly freaked myself out that I was actually putting diesel in my car instead of regular 89 gas...I'm just so used to diesel being green!

The nozzle should be too big on a diesel pump to get diesel into an (unleaded) gasoline powered car but it is certainly possible the other way around.
