PHOENIX (AP) - Officials are evacuating hundreds of people from the Grand Canyon after an earthen dam broke following heavy rains.
A spokeswoman for Grand Canyon National Park says the Redlands Dam broke early Sunday and is causing flooding in the town of Supai (SOO'-py) at the bottom of the canyon.
She says Supai is not under water, and no injuries are reported. About 400 members of the Havasupai (ha-vuh-SOO'-py) tribe live there.
Some campers and river runners in the Grand Canyon also are being evacuated by helicopter. Evacuees are being taken to a Red Cross shelter in Peach Springs, Arizona.
