QoD Weekend -- August 16

#1 Post by JBillyGirl » Sat Aug 16, 2008 10:36 am

QoD Weekend August 16 -- "Gimme That Old-Time Religion"

I tried to take the difficulty down a notch, so hopefully this QoD will be more doable that last weekend's. (I hope it's not too easy!) It will be open through Monday until midnight Eastern time. Put your answers in a spoiler box. Thou shalt not consult any outside sources.

1. According to the New Testament, what was the name of the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ the night before his death? (Only the first name is necessary.)

2. The holiest symbol in Jainism is also an infamous symbol in the West today. What is it?

3. Name one item of food or drink you would most likely NOT find in a strictly observant Mormon's home.

4. The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are central concepts in what major Asian religion?

5. What Hindu god of destruction shares his name with a Jewish tradition of mourning?

6. Of the three major holy cities in Islam, Mecca is the holiest. Name one of the other two.

7. On what Jewish holiday are the last verses of Deuteronomy and the first verses of Genesis traditionally read?

8. The South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet" notoriously satirized what recently established (and highly litigious) religion, prompting the departure of the late Isaac Hayes from the cast?

5. What Hindu god of destruction shares his name with a Jewish tradition of mourning?
Shiva? Again no doubt something I learned on this bored!

6. Of the three major holy cities in Islam, Mecca is the holiest. Name one of the other two.

Nope. Rosh Hashanah?

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

QoD Weekend August 16 -- "Gimme That Old-Time Religion"

As I said, I tried to take the difficulty down a notch from the week before, but I think I was maybe a bit too successful!

1. According to the New Testament, what was the name of the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ the night before his death? (Only the first name is necessary.) -- Judas (Iscariot). I wonder if asking his last name would have tripped up anyone, as I think it did once on WWTBAM?

2. The holiest symbol in Jainism is also an infamous symbol in the West today. What is it? -- The swastika. It's an important symbol in many other cultures, but unfortunately it's been forever tarnished by you-know-who.

3. Name one item of food or drink you would most likely NOT find in a strictly observant Mormon's home. -- Any food/drink with a habit-forming substance or drug, especially alcohol or caffeine. I think there is some debate about caffeine, but alcohol is a definite no-no.

4. The Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path are central concepts in what major Asian religion? -- Buddhism.

5. What Hindu god of destruction shares his name with a Jewish tradition of mourning? -- Shiva. He is also a god of transformation. A Jewish person "sits shiva" for a week after a family member dies.

6. Of the three major holy cities in Islam, Mecca is the holiest. Name one of the other two. -- Medina and Jerusalem. Non-Muslims are forbidden from entering Mecca and Medina, though some, such as the 19th-century explorer Richard Burton, have disguised themselves and sneaked in. (I don't recommend trying it yourself, though.)

7. On what Jewish holiday are the last verses of Deuteronomy and the first verses of Genesis traditionally read? -- Simchat Torah. This translates as "Rejoicing with the Torah." In the evening, the last verses of the last book of the Torah (Deuteronomy) are read, followed by dancing and singing with the Torah scrolls. In the morning, this portion is read again, immediately followed by the opening verses of Genesis.

8. The South Park episode "Trapped in the Closet" notoriously satirized what recently established (and highly litigious) religion, prompting the departure of the late Isaac Hayes from the cast? -- Scientology. The episode was pretty merciless, depicting a far-fetched science fiction account of creation with the caption "THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE." In a reference to Scientology's fondness for filing lawsuits, all the credits read "John Smith" or "Jane Smith."

I'll post scores later in this thread.

Looking over all the answers, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who read this question. skim-edited "one of" and ended up looking like they were trying to be a smarty pants.

Then I would have had to decide whether to go for the sure one (Jerusalem) or the one that I wasn't positive, but yielded a Tone-Loc joke (Madinah/Medina).

Because my the basic rule that guides my life is never pass up the opportunity for a Tone-Loc joke. Ha!

When our night trivia meister asks the questions he plays a song. Sometimes the song is a hint. Monday he asked about the holy city where Mohammed died. He played Funky Cold Medina.........and there were still a couple of teams that did not get it correct.
