I didn't realize he was that old. He'll be missed.
My favorite Jerry Wexler quote was from being involved in the payola era;
paraphrased by my memory, from one of the many documentaries he was interviewed in:
"Well, sure, we payed them to play our records, but they only wanted to be payed to play the records they liked. We'd give them a pile of our records & they'd pick out the ones they liked & we'd pass them a packet of money, a crate of Scotch, whatever."
Aside from paying off the occasional DJ, he produced Aretha Franklin's hits, etc, etc; a pretty much endless list of great music in which he was involved.
