I can't believe the uniforms they wear. The Mens' Beach Volleyball uniforms are a lot more modest.

How odd, it's also the favourite of two teenage boys in my family!

Go figure.

They were talking about that on the radio here this morning. I don't know if it is true (I'm not a huge beach volleyball fan, although I do have it on in the background right now)...but they said the men are not allowed to go shirtless...yet the women are running and jumping in significantly smaller bathing suits than I'm comfortable in sitting on the beach, nevermind running and jumping.

Maybe if someone had a "wardrobe malfunction" they'd allow the ladies to wear a little more clothing!

It puts me right to sleep. I was grumbling earlier tonight about why they choose to air it "prime time". Maybe now I know. 8)

Sure, I like seeing athletic women dressed like that, but the attire has bugged me a bit. I'll take McPeak's explanation at face value and believe that the women feel they play better when clothed that way.

Despite anything about the clothing, I really enjoy watching both the beach and indoor volleyball. I can admire the athleticism and the strategy involved in the game. I also really like the way the game "flows". So, I'm glad they're showing a lot of the volleyball.

By the way, I enjoy watching both the men's and women's volleyball. I'll freely admit that there is a little bonus, though, when I watch the women's. Hey, I'm just a guy!

VAdame wrote:Explanation Here
VAdame's link sent me to a site purporting to answer the question: Why do the men wear shirts and the women wear bikinis?

Answer #1: "Women choose to wear a two piece bathing suit because it is the least restrictive uniform possible." -- Holly McPeak

So we deliberately restrict the men's play?

Answer #2: "Not only are you battling the heat of the sun, but you are diving around in the sand." --McPeak

Therefore men do not need this strip-down assistance to battle the sun and sand?

Answer #3: "Imagine the feel of sand inside your clothes combined with sweat. I can't think of anything worse." --McPeak

But men are expected to live with this worst possible scenario, this sun-sweat combination?

Answer #4: "I prefer to see the men play without shirts. When male players train they traditionally choose to wear a longer boardshort to their knees."--McPeak

So the men's choice is respected, while the women's choice from countries with a modest culture like China and Japan is disregarded?

Answer #5: "But the governing international body for the sport prefers a cleaner look with their country, names and numbers on their shirts." --McPeak

So a shirt with numbering and lettering all over it is a cleaner look than a bikini top with numbering and lettering all over it?

Answer #6: "The biggest question I hear is, aren't you self-conscious competing in a bathing suit? Not at all." --McPeak

And this answers the question "Why do the men wear shirts and the women wear bikinis" how?

Answer #7: "When we are competing we do not think of our uniforms as revealing or sexy but as great athletic machines." --McPeak

So shorts and a T would make them think they were scummier than a junkyard dog?

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." --McPeak

And this answers the question "Why do the men wear shirts and the women wear bikinis" how?

Sorry, Holly, you been out in the sun too long, or you ate too much sand, or your great athletic machine restricted the flow of blood to your head. You're all wet.

Women's beach volleyball is for that wonderful profitable demographic in which all y'all's teenage and twenty-something sons fall. I don't have any problem with that, because that beach volleyball scene in Top Gun is the only one in the whole movie that I can watch, but Holly and her ilk make me shake my head in wonder.

It's not just beach volleyball. Here are some pictures of athletes in other sports as well. Especially note the women's track uniforms as opposed to the men's; one would think both athletes would be wearing the same type uniform in order to reduce wind resistance as much as possible.

They should just go back to the original Olympics and have everyone compete nude.

An over-generalization in one of the pictures there. Only Australia's women's basketball team has worn that spandex uniform as far as I can tell. All of the other countries wear something more like the men's uniform.

Almost identical in style to the uniforms being worn by the men's teams:

Say what you want about their attire, but the US women Beach Volleyball team KICKS HINEY! They are amazing to watch - just great athletes.

Walsh-May-Treanor, USA (No. 2 seed)
Branagh-Youngs, USA (No. 5 seed)

China's #1 team got the #1 seed. There's a "homer rule" in beach volleyball with regard to seeding.

When I was posting that I wondered if home country got the courtesy seed, but I hadn't looked it up yet because I was busy carrying on about Jack the Ripper.

And now I don't have to! YAY! Thanks, guys, for informing me on that.

But I still bet the Boadicia/Morrigan duo would kick ass. And then actually give May/Walsh a run for their money.
