For men only thing that comes to mind is baseball and boxing. I think that baseball is going away as well but not until 2012. I will guess boxing for men.

First of all, I feel I should apologize for the level of difficulty in this QoD. I had tried to get a mix of easier and harder questions, but it seems like they just turned out to be harder ones. I guess I’m such a big fan of the Olympics that I didn’t realize what “normal,” non-obsessed people might know (or be able to guess). I promise I’ll try to make the next QoD more accessible.

1. The original, ancient Olympic Games, open only to men, were held every four years to honor Zeus. A similar, lesser-known competition for women only was held to honor whom? – Hera. The Herean Games were held every four years and consisted of foot races for unmarried virgins. Unlike the men, the women did not perform nekkid, but they did wear short-skirted tunics with one breast exposed.

2. What was the first year in which women were allowed to compete in the modern Olympic games? -- 1900. Women competed in golf, croquet, and tennis. Pierre de Coubertin had opposed women’s participation, and he continued to fight against their inclusion throughout his tenure as president, which ran till 1924. A real peach, he was.

3. What female gymnast holds the record for most Olympic medals ever won by any single person, man or woman? – Larissa Latynina. The Russian won 18 medals total: 9 gold, 5 silver, and 4 bronze between 1956 and 1964. If Michael Phelps sticks around until 2012, you might hear her name thrown around in London if he comes within spitting distance of breaking her record. (His maximum potential through Beijing would be 16.)

4. Name one sport in which only women will compete AND one sport in which only men will compete at the Beijing Olympic Games. (You must name both to get credit.) – Women-only sports: rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, and softball. Men-only sports: boxing, baseball, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Freestyle wrestling added women’s events in 2004, so I couldn’t accept “wrestling.” Uneven bars, high bar, and pommel horse are all events within the sport of gymnastics.

5. Name one summer Olympic sport in which men and women will compete against each other on equal footing this year. (Hint: There are only two.) – Equestrian and sailing. Shooting events used to be coed, but they eventually separated the sexes – allegedly because “some” men couldn’t stand the thought of losing to a girl.

6. What was the infamous result of the women's 800-meter run at the 1928 Olympic games in Amsterdam? – Several of the women collapsed at the end of the race, apparently due to stifling heat and inadequate conditioning. Because of this, women were limited to 200-meter races until 1960. (I'd have accepted that as an answer, too.) Mebbe I should have had a Stella Walsh Q instead of this one.

7. U.S. swimmer Shirley Babashoff was dubbed "Surly Shirley" at the 1976 Summer Olympics because she complained about what? – The East German swimmers. After coming in second to East Germans (Kornelia Ender in particular) in four races, complained that they must have been doping because of the size of their muscles. She got lot of flak for saying it, but she was eventually proven right.

8. Two women -- Christa Luding-Rothenburger of East Germany and Clara Hughes of Canada -- have won both Summer and Winter Olympic medals. Interestingly, their medals were won in the same two sports: cycling and what winter sport? – Speed skating. For some reason a number of cyclists have crossed over into speed skating and vice versa.
