Are you telling us that sleepy, little Trinidad, Colo., is the destination of choice for wannabe shehes?

That astonishes me. I thought the town's entire purpose on the planet was to signify that northbound drivers finally had gotten through the Raton Pass and maybe as a place to buy gas every now and then.

And it's a little picture postcard town just north of Raton Pass.

You mean you didn't know? There's a whole big story behind the doctor whose name I forget right now. But he kind of just backed into it and it became his life's work. They're doing some facial feminization surgery down there now that is incredible!

Here's my Mary Lou Retton story. One evening in the late 1980s, I was driving home from work, southbound on the Mopac Expressway. Out of nowhere, a red Corvette convertible with West Virginia plates blew past me in the left lane. The weird thing was that there appeared to be no one driving. So I put the pedal to the metal and tried to keep pace with the ghost Vette. I pulled up next to it and finally saw that there was a tiny person at the wheel, who could barely see over the dashboard. Then I realized that it was Mary Lou. She lived in Austin for a year or two, when she was dating Shannon Kelley, a UT football player whom she ultimately married. I seem to recall that she had personalized license plates, but I can't remember what they said.

And that's the end of my Mary Lou story. Is it good enough to get me on a game show, or does it need some embellishment?

Raton is nothing compared to Glorieta in a blizzard. I speak from experience on that one.

Wouldn't that be Malvada Ardilla Pass?

Ahh, Glorieta.

***potentially gross story below***

I had an accident when I was 12 involving a big stick, my sister and a jacket on said big stick, while spending the day in Glorieta marking county lines with my Dad. I tried to play it off to my mom when I got home saying, ok, its ok. REALLY it wasn't. The big stick I tripped over, after my sister brought it down too quickly, caused me to fall onto the much smaller stick that went into my arm. I tried to get out (but nearly passed out) So, by the time we got home 6 hours later, and by the time my mom was convinced that I had once again broken my arm (remember I'm not the most graceful person) and rushed me to the hospital, lovely gangrene had started to set in. (as per the orthopedic surgeon to whom I personally brought tons of business) Oh, and since it was past midnight by then, it was officially FATHER'S DAY. LOL

All of this gave reason for my mom to repeat another of her favorite sayings, "Now you see why I divorced that man" In all fairness, I didn't tell my Dad there was a stick in my arm, so we stayed up there finishing what we were doing. Now I have a cool scar on my inside wrist that looks like a lightning bolt! SHAZAM!

LOL,

Oh, and all that happened in 1982, so it sorta fits into the thread title. (if nothing else....lol)

I'm glad you mentioned this little detail, or you dad would come off looking pretty bad here.

Interestingly enough, it used to be a great place to stop for the night while travelling. On at least three different occasions, I stopped there with friends while we were on our way somewhere to go skiing (usually Breckenridge.)

Why was it a great place to stop? Right next to the hotel we would stay in, on the southern edge of town, was a little greasy spoon called Bob and Earl's. Damn, that was good. They served the best kind of breakfast: completely unhealthy. :D Of course, Trinidad ceased to be of any importance to us when we found out, on a subsequent trip through that area, that Bob and Earl's was no longer in business.

(Hmmmm, now that I've looked at the very last listing on this page, I wonder if maybe it just moved instead of shutting down?)

I got astonished about a dozen years ago when a good friend graduated from CLETA (Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy) in Trinidad and was regaling us with tales of how weird it could get. She said the same thing, it all started with that one doctor.

As for Raton, Spanish-speaking visitors are constantly astonished when someone casually mentions something about it -- "Raton!? Are you sure? That means rat!" So then of course we bring up Truth or Consequences. They also puzzle a bit over Del Norte, but by then are willing to accept a town called The North, seems normal...
