Golden Moldies

#1 Post by SportsFan68 » Fri Aug 08, 2008 9:49 am

I'm almost embarrassed to post this one in this bunch. Name the artist:

Goodbye Emil, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABCs
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye Emil, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
I wish we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the hills we could climb were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to show me right from wrong
But too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along

Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little kids are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song like the seasons have all gone

Goodbye Francoise, my trusted wife
Without you I'd had a lonely life
You cheated lots of times with them
But I forgave you in the end
Though your lover was my friend

Goodbye Francoise, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With your lovers everywhere
Just be careful, I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach were just starfish on the beach

Goodbye Michelle, my little one
You gave me joy and helped me find the sun
And every time when I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Although your lyrics are a bit different than the version I know, this was my favorite song when I was a little girl. I had the 45, and would play it over and over again.

Did the 45 just disappear one day and your parents has no idea what happened to it?
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Etaoin gave a dissertation on the original lyrics when I had this in my Lyrically Speaking game a few months ago. But I can't remember his point anymore (or even if I understood it then, ha!).

We would sing it over and over again at school. These lyrics are c. about 3rd grade.
Spoiler
We had joy, we had fun,
We were naked in the sun.
But the sun burned our balls,
So we put on overalls!
Spoiler
I'm darned good and ready.

I was busted twice for using the Emil verse in previous LS games since it was apparently not in the radio version of the song. But he definitely leads off with the Emil verse in the Beat Club appearance they play occasionally on VH1C....

I dont remember what I said, then, but I think you may enjoy this YouTube video of the original Jacques Brel song, "Le Moribond", with subtitles.

This one still makes me cry. "Wildfire, too. Oh, and "Please Come to Boston" gets me every time.

What are your all-time biggest tear-jerkers out there? Or is it just me...

I've REALLY been enjoying the '70's channel on Sirius radio in the car. My teens are ready to puke. They're sure digging up some excellent off-the-beaten-track moldies.

Does anyone remember "Floy Joy," "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?" and "It's So Nice To Be With You? Those were fun, forgot about those.

I know it's sappy, but for me it's My Heart Will Go On.

I usually get tears over Chopin's Heroic Polonaise as well, but that doesn't have words.

If I sat here long enough I'd probably come up with a bunch, but I'll just toss in the first one that came to mind. It's "You'll Be the Scarecrow" by E (Mark Oliver Everett, leader of the band Eels):

YOU'LL BE THE SCARECROW

one day i'll have to fly
to the next great unknown
one day i'll be out of here
back on my own

and when i come around for my goodbyes
you'll be the scarecrow

you'll be the scarecrow
the one i adore
the one i'll carry with me
forevermore

you were the special one
something we shared
the one that i'll miss the most
the one who cared

so when i come around for my goodbyes
you'll be the scarecrow

you'll be the scarecrow
the one i adore
the one i'll carry with me
forevermore

there may not be a day
for a due reunion
there may not be a day
for us

one day you'll look and see
a purple sunset
and then you'll know that i'm okay
i'm doing my best
and when i come around for my goodbyes
you'll be the scarecrow

The saddest song I've ever heard is probably "The Last Game Of The Season" (Blind Man In The Bleachers).
