ANSWERS

1. Whose statue stands atop this column in Trafalgar Square?
Image

Admiral Horatio Nelson. Almost everyone recognized Lord Nelson, the hero of Trafalgar.

2. "Why can't the English?" -- This actor, who would win both a Tony and an Oscar for his portrayal of Professor Henry Higgins, was born on March 5, 1908.

Rex Harrison. I guess the Bored knows their musicals, so I better find a more challenging question category!

3. What New Zealand-born physicist would win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances and would later be knighted and then made a British Baron?

Ernest Rutherford. The father of nuclear physics turned out to be somewhat less well-known.

4. In 1908, what British monarch was nearing the end of his nine year reign, after having waited for the job as Prince of Wales for 59 years?

Edward VII. Who can keep all those Roman numerals straight? King Edward really was Prince Albert Edward, but chose not to diminish his father's importance by using that name as king. Following royal custom, he was able to choose from any of his dozen or so other baptismal names. :)

Now lets go over this one more time:
Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee,
Harry, Dick, John, Harry Three,
One-To-Three Neds, Richard Two,
Harrys Four-Five-Six... then who?

Edwards Four-Five, Dick the Bad,
Harrys (twain), Ned Six (the lad),
Mary, Bessie, James you ken,
Then Charlie, Charlie, James again...

Will & Mary, Anne of gloria,
Georges ( 4! ), Will Four, Victoria,
Edward Seven next, and then
Came George the Fifth in 1910...

Ned the Eighth soon abdicated,
So George Six was coronated,
Then Number Two Elizabeth...
And that's all, folks (until her death...)!!
There'll be a test later.

To be fair Vice Admiral Lord Nelson (or the sculptor in this case) wasn't really trying to copy Napoleon by sticking his right hand inside his jacket.

He had no right hand, nor most of the right arm for that matter. But it did help to balance out the fact that he had lost his right eye as well...

Dear Mr. Marley,

I would like some points please
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
