JFF Olympic trivia

#1 Post by earendel » Thu Aug 07, 2008 8:04 am

With the Summer Olympics kicking off tomorrow, how about some Olympic trivia? Ten bogus points for each right answer.

1. China, the host country, borders fourteen other nations. Name them.

2. What are the names of the Olympic mascots and what do they represent?

3. What games are new to the Summer Olympics this year?

4. How many gold medals did China win in Athens? [BONUS: How many total medals did China win?]

5. How many total medals will be awarded during these games?

6. What three countries are fielding their first Olympic teams this year?

7. What events will be contested this year but will not be part of the Summer Olympics in 2012?

D'oh!

That's actually a much bigger mistake than getting my 'Stans confused.

And that also means I have an extra one on my list or something.

The correct 14th country is Kyrgyzstan.

And Thailand didn't belong on the list.

Now that that's settled...

I hope everyone else isn't waiting on me to answer the sports questions.

If you've been playing this month's QoD, you'll know that I don't do sports questions. :P

And now, for the rest of the questions:

2. What are the names of the Olympic mascots and what do they represent?
Beibei the fish (water), Jingjing the panda (wood), Huanhuan the flame (fire), Yingying the antelope (Earth), Nini the swallow (metal)... and when you put those syllables together--Bei Jing Huan Ying Ni--they mean "Beijing welcomes you"

3. What games are new to the Summer Olympics this year?
men's BMX, women's BMX, men's 10k marathon swimming, women's 10k marathon swimming, women's 3000m steeplechase, women's team foil, women's team sabre, men's team table tennis, women's team table tennis

4. How many gold medals did China win in Athens? [BONUS: How many total medals did China win?]
32 gold, 17 silver, 14 bronze = 63 total

5. How many total medals will be awarded during these games?
302 events x 3 medals per event = 906 total, although the actual number will be higher given all of the pairs and teams events

6. What three countries are fielding their first Olympic teams this year?
Marshall Islands, Montenegro (separate from Serbia), and Tuvalu

7. What events will be contested this year but will not be part of the Summer Olympics in 2012?
sadly, one of them is baseball... the other is its cousin, softball

Black Lung luggi spit. There are 3 separate contests: Size, distance, and freestyle.

Aren't there always two bronze medals for each boxing weight class? I don't know if any of the other fighting sports have the same system.

You are correct. IIRC, all of the "combat" events now have double bronze winners, with taekwando just being allowed to award two bronze medals this year. Judo and boxing have not required a third-place match for the past Olympics.

The rationale is to minimize the risk of (further) injury to participants.
