As near as I can tell, cooking bacon, complaining about the gout and women athletes and doing fine carpentry are the main activities.Weyoun wrote:I am moving there next week. What is there to do there?
Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I've never been there personally, but IIRC George Romero filmed the original Night of the Living Dead just outside of Pittsburgh. That film is just chock-full of neat ideas for a night out.Weyoun wrote:I am moving there next week. What is there to do there?

Welcome to the neighborhood, Steve!
What part of town are you headed to? As for things to do, suppose that depends on what you like doing. There are terrific museums, excellent theater, delicious restaurants, some great bar trivia....
There are bad sports teams (I work right next to PNC Park, so I know from bad), good sports teams (I'm curious as to how the Stillers will do this year, and the Pens were in the Stanley Cup finals), great walking trails (if you're into that sort of thing)....
There's plenty to do, in other words.

I know nothing about Pittsburgh, but Adventure Boy went there during his senior year in college to some kind of national geography association meeting. He loved the place, and he raved about the local people he met. He would go back in a flash, if opportunity arose.
I know only two people from Pittsburgh, but I'm rather fond of them both.

Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

They didn't say Evil Squirrel Hill.
Well, there are those who think of it that way...especially in the morning rush hour, or when they close the Parkway there (which happens a lot, since they're rebuilding that portion of highway). Squirrel Hill is where the main trunk of the major commuting highway (known around here as the Parkway East) has to go through a tunnel....it can back up for miles in the morning.
As for trivia bars, I don't know of many on that end of town. The guy who runs the game I play on Tuesdays has 5 bars around town that he runs his live pub trivia at. Four are in the southwest part of town (the Hop House in Green Tree on Thursdays, Tambellini's in Bridgeville on Tuesdays -- that's where I play -- , Ferty's in Carnegie on Saturdays, and Jay's Sports Bar in Southpointe -- down I-79 between Bridgeville and Canonsburg, if you have a map handy -- on Wednesdays). The fifth is in the North Hills, at the Hop House in Ross Township, on Mondays. Competition can be fierce, and Bob (the Host) can write some real ballbusters, but you'd probably do very well. We're nearing the end of our 3-times-a-year Trivia Bowl tournament now...the big finale will be at Jay's on 8//17. The next tournament will start just after this one ends, I think. You get points based on your placement for each of the weekly games, and the top 3 teams from each bar go on to the Trivia Bowl. But each week has gift certificates to the bar for the 1st and 2nd place finishers, so there's always reason to play.
Unfortunately, none of these locations is anywhere near Squirrel Hill. I dunno if you'd be up to a half-hour or better commute to play. I do know of one place (a Buffalo Wild Wings) that has a live-trivia game out in Monroeville (past Squirrel Hill about 20 minutes to the east of town), but I've never played there, so I can't comment on the quality.

I saw a game at PNC Park a couple of years ago and it just might be the best stadium in the country, so be sure to pay a visit there.
The players, however, are all over the place like Chicago, Boston, Houston, Seattle, and I discovered this player today in the Bronx:

Doing this:

_______
The last season at Yankee Stadium

Welcome, Steve! I live in Oakland -- next neighborhood over from Squirrel Hill
If you're a swimmer, I hang around Schenley Park Pool with a pretty nice adult swim bunch. If you bike, run, roller-blade, etc., gotta check out the "Jail Trail"!
Of course, you have to do the touristy thing & see the city from atop Mount Washington -- I'll probably be up there some this week as Karen & John want to say their wedding vows up there, so we'll be scoping out spots.
Again, welcome to 'da Burgh -- you'll find plenty to do & nice folks to do it with here!

We still have four in metro Houston, I think.peacock2121 wrote:Wow! Four BB's in one town!
How many do we have in Houston? Will Pittsburgh soon surpass Houston?
Weren't they both voted Fattest City by some magazine or other?
Five if tigerx ever posts again.
Unless I'm forgetting someone.
And "voting" for Fattest City means that the results follow the old dictum "You can't vote on the truth".
No matter where you go, there you are.

The southern California area could be the largest number close by but not necessarily in the same city since it's so spread out.peacock2121 wrote:Wow! Four BB's in one town!

I am a Pittsburgh native, though- as a matter of fact, KT went to high school with my brother (although this factoid was not uncovered until long after I had "met" KT on these boards).
