And who knows... maybe that was their intention? I bet Michael Davies will eventually talk about his motivation.


I thought their goal has been the opposite, to make it harder to reach 25K and to have many $1000-ish winners. This so they could afford to pay out the $250K/500K/1M once in a while. I remember hearing (was it Davies himself) that the problem with much of the first season or two was less the two $1M winners but more too many $64K-range winners drying up the budget. Hence the more difficult $8K-25K questions, the lowering of the $25K-100K prizes, and the STQ available only above 25K.


Maybe they are thinking the time limit will weed out more of the weak, and think the strong will go for the $250K questions in spite of the time limit.

I have the sneaking suspicion that they might throw out the time limit completely, or else add on more time. Even the strong need time to figure out difficult questions, of the kind others have noted -- "What is the most common presidential first name?" or "Which of the following have not won an Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy?" Who would ever pull the trigger on a big money question like that in 60 seconds?

And I feel like that's what differentiates Millionaire from other quiz shows, like Jeopardy, which emphasize speedy recall. Watching the contestants try to figure it out, and squirm, is a big part of the fun.

My feeling -

If the institute a clock, Millionaire is dead to me. Jeopardy is a much better rapid recall game. The WWTBAM allure has always been the waiting, the weighing, the second guessing.

Add a clock and I wash my hands of it.

Almost makes me glad I didn't waste a day auditioning this year.

I definitely agree. They are also dealing with potentially life-changing money amounts, and also with loved ones and financial situations that could drive their decision-making.

For my money, one of the most memorable moments to date from the Syndie show was when the college kid recited the Pledge of Allegiance over and over again to count the number of words - and kept coming up with a different total. It was one of the funniest things I had ever seen on the show...and it would never have happened had there been a clock in place.

They had safeguards in place previously - the ability to trim out dead spots and (if need be) The Warning.

We will see...............

Absolutely.

And bantering about the questions, not about what I do for fun or how I want to spend the money or any of those other application questions, is what I've always wanted to do. Any show can chit-chat.

I feel sorry for anyone who gets on the 3 Generations show, the time limit is going to make it very difficult!

Anyone who is a good NTN player can handle a time clock. Those of us who play on teams have gotten rather good at consulting under pressure.

It's definitely possible to play well within a time limit (NTN players, quiz bowlers have proven this), but I just don't think it's necessary for the show. I don't mind the removal/replacing/switching out of lifelines, but the idea that you can take "forever" to think about a question adds so much to the show. Gone now are the "I think it's B final an---, no C, wait A" moments which were unique to the program.
