French Press review for kayrharris
I can't find my World Market thread without actually looking for it, so I'm just starting anew.
I've used it a couple times now and I think once I get over the learning curve (yes, I have a learning curve for pouring hot water into a glass jar, ha!) I might like it.
My biggest problem is forgetting about it and by the time I get back to it, it's a bit on the crunchy side. I think I'll have to pretend that I'm making light to medium coffee and then I'll end up with what I wanted in the first place.
Also, I get a black sludge at the bottom of my cup (sort of looks like if you dumped too much hot chocolate mix in your cup before you added the water). I've tried my Hawaiian Kona coffee and some Seattle Company sample bricks I recently got in the mail, so I think I'm going to have to go for a coarser grind next time I go to the supermarket.

I always get the black sludge. I think it's just part of the deal.
It goes well in the dispos-all, or on a compost heap if you want to start one.

Thank you for mentioning migraines!! I haven't had one in weeks and have had one all day today! I'm so over medicated right now it's ridiculous, however, it has finally eased up.ulysses5019 wrote:And you wonder why you get migraines.kayrharris wrote:black sludge is part of it. it says use coarse ground, but I prefer the regular stuff. Then again, I like my coffee very strong.
It will get easier and better.

Should I fetch Billy Mays?
Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Since two of you mentioned the black sludge is normal, I figured I'd live with it. So when I was trying it again with that in mind, I washing off the brown foam that gets on the spoon and realized that the foam and sludge remind me of instant coffee. I haven't had that for so long that I didn't even connect it.
So I ground some at the store yesterday and am going to give that a whirl. Most of my loose is espresso grind and that just isn't going to work. My Kona is not quite that fine, but not by much as that's for cappucinio.
