Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

It just seems to me that McCain could do better than making it look like he's playing catch-up. Does anyone on his staff have any more imagination than to think, "Their guy goes to Germany, we'll go to a German restaurant." If I'm one of Leno's writers, I send the McCain people a thank-you note.

I just saw that on msnbc. The headline on the screen, with Obama speaking in the background, was, "Obama speaks to 200,000 in Berlin; McCain goes to German restaurant."nitrah55 wrote:Does anyone on his staff have any more imagination than to think, "Their guy goes to Germany, we'll go to a German restaurant."
And then they cut to McCain speaking to the press in the processed cheese aisle of the supermarket.
Very classy.

The GOP German strategy goes beyond just the German restaurant stop:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/24/ ... criticism/
McCain's campaign is doing what it can to keep Obama from using the overseas trip to burnish his foreign policy credentials.
The German capital wasn't the only Berlin to be front and center in the presidential campaign Thursday: The Republican National Committee aired radio ads promoting McCain's candidacy in Berlin, New Hampshire; Berlin, Pennsylvania; and Berlin, Wisconsin.
They're not the most expensive media markets for the RNC but perhaps a clever way to gain some national press and buzz in three battleground states while Obama delivered one of the biggest speeches of the campaign cycle in the European capital.

For all the media crowing about Obama's wonderful world victory tour, the Republicans have acted quite shrewdly in making their points well enough to blunt a lot of its effectiveness.
The flip-flop image has stuck. The idea that improved conditions in Iraq are a result of the surge has stuck. The idea that the media has turned the tour into a giant suck-up-to-Obama lovefest has stuck. The result is that the polls aren't moving on what should be Obama's best week ever.
There's a lot of people, not just Republicans, who find it unseemly that a presidential candidate should be going on a tour that's playing more Elvis than anything remotely political in nature. Obama's vanity is showing throughout all this (some of the German posters promoting his speech bear an eerie resemblance to Nazi posters of the 1930's).

That particular poster, directed at occupied Holland, would have to date from 1940-1945, SSS.silverscreenselect wrote: (some of the German posters promoting his speech bear an eerie resemblance to Nazi posters of the 1930's).
My initial thought was that the Germans know how to make impressive posters. But I can totally see what you're saying. If you take scissors and cut the end of one of those diagonal lines and rotate it 90 degrees, then cut another, rotate it 90 degrees, cut the end of that and rotate it 90 degrees....

But isn't it nice for once to have an American politician go overseas and give a speech to crowds who wave American flags rather than burn them? Conservatives have been hard up for years to get a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, and yet here's a man whose mere presence ceases flag burning.
If Obama could turn gay people straight just by laying his hands upon their heads, I might actually believe that he is the Second Coming...

..what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms.

The European adulation of Obama is another example of low information people having a much higher opinion of him than high information people. To put his appearance in perspective, Obama attracted a crowd of 200,000. David Hasselhoff attracted a crowd of 1,000,000 when he appeared in Berlin in 1989. In all fairness to Obama, however, he hadn't already been the star of two internationally acclaimed television series when he made his appearance in Berlin.Bob Juch wrote:What?
