Not a good day #1

#1 Post by gsabc » Wed Jul 23, 2008 10:40 am

We are going to have to put down our labrador retriever, Midnight (see the new avatar). She is 14, old for a purebred, especially a large one. Over the past couple of years, she has started to show her age and the effects of having ACL surgery on both back knees early in life. She also basically can't feel her back feet because of a progressive neuropathy.

In the last month, she has visibly gotten weaker in the back end. Stairs have been an issue for a while, but for the last few days, even standing and walking have become extremely difficult. She also can't feel when she has to go out to poop until the last minute. The situation has gotten to the point where it's no longer comfortable for any of us, especially her. We managed to get her another six months after the bloat surgery in January, but it's time. The earliest appointment we could get is tomorrow morning, so tomorrow won't be such a good day, either.

Please pray for an easy passage to stay with Truffles, Morris, Meeko, Sherman, and all the Bored BB pets who are there to welcome her.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Ah Crap.

I won't give you all the platitudes, as you probably have said them already, just lots of hugs and support.

Midnight will get an excellent welcome over the Rainbow Bridge. Sorry for your loss.

Tell Midnight that Elvis the Yellow Lab, Lucky the Black Cat, Boomer the Persian and all the others will be waiting to play.

Beebs, our Black Lab, is pretty much the same age and close to the same condition. I send hugs to you guys. It's gonna be tough.
Well, then

I am so sorry.

I wish that all pets could just die of old age, in their sleep, surrounded by their families, without having suffered through chronic medical conditions.

There are businesses making scooters for the back end of dogs without use of their back legs; I'm sure you've looked into this. The "can't feel when to poop/pee" is probably at this point the unfixable problem.

Good Night & G-d Bless, Midnight.

I'm sorry, gsabc.

No doubt, you've taken good care of Midnight, over the years. Now she needs just one more thing from you. :(

Beautiful dog & I know a loyal companion. I would be crying for days.
Hugs to you and your family. The suffering is hard to watch and we know this is for best, as difficult a decision as one has to make.

Mr. gs, I'm very sorry. I send wet kisses and warm snuggles to everybody in your family. I'm also sending an eyelid message to my sister Tigger to ask her to watch out for Midnight. She'll show him where to go to find the Big Dog Bowl in the sky and stuff like that. She likes to help.

It makes me sad, though.

So sorry for this terribly sad day today. You always know it's around the corner, but so hard to face. Hope you make it through ok, knowing so many's thoughts are with you.
