Leaving early Friday morning

#1 Post by mrkelley23 » Sat Jul 19, 2008 12:07 pm

Driving to Memphis in the 10 year old van. Seeing a Redbirds game Friday night, then staying south of downtown, so as to get a head start on the next day's travel to...

Dauphin Island on Saturday. We get to spend two nights there, beachcombing and prospecting (we hope to make this a yearly vacation destination, if we seem to be a good fit). Then Monday morning, after lazing around on the beach some more, we drive to ...

Mobile, AL to board a Carnival cruise ship for a five day cruise to Cozumel and Calica. Normally we don't get too excited about Cozumel, but between having the boys with us and being able to play this new game they're calling the Race Fantastique, we're actually eager to go. When we get back, we drive to...

Birmingham for another minor league game, this one featuring the Birmingham Barons. Overnight in Birmingham, then the long trip back to Evansville on Sunday, just in time for me to return to school the following Thursday.

Too early. And too short of a summer. But it sure sounds like a good vacation. :)

I haven't been keeping up with minor league baseball very well. I was in Louisville last week, where they were having the AAA all star game. For many years, the local team was the Louisville Redbirds, and they set a lot of minor league attendance records. Then they built a nice stadium downtown called Louisville Slugger Field, and the team name became the Bats. I didn't know the Redbirds name reverted to Memphis. I thought the Memphis Chicks name was too iconic to change.

Have a good trip!

Sounds wonderful! Too bad you can't get MMFF's tuneful road mix before you go.

Have fun. Sing to whatever's on the radio.

What is this new game they're calling the Race Fantastique? A French version of The Amazing Race?

Yes, and if you look at the sample clues, you may see a similarity to one of the June QoDs....

It's pricey (although not as pricey as swimming with the dolphins) but any time you can get three teenaged boys excited about the same thing (especially if it's not sex-related:)) it is, as the sainted Martha would say, a Good Thing.

Sounds cool! This could make a great event for BB get-togethers.

So are they having one of these LARFs in Cozumel during your cruise? I see their "Latest News" page is two years old and there's nothing listed under "Upcoming Events".

Yes, it's now apparently a standard shore excursion for Carnival in Cozumel. What we were able to find out on TripAdvisor is that it doesn't always go, because sometimes there aren't enough people signed up. So we'll have to wait and see.

I hope you get to do it; I'll be looking forward to a team report!

BTW, is your youngest really a teen already? Or is he just acting like one? :P

Close enough -- he turned 12 in May, and pre-puberty is causing all the wonderful teen symptoms we can handle. Not to mention his older brothers egg him on, too.

It's minor stuff, though. Just enough to maintain conversation.... :)
