Where the Heck Am I?

I didn't look at the Where the Heck Am I yesterday. Today I noticed that the one answered early this morning was the Uncle Wilber Fountain.

The Uncle Wilber Fountain is some idiotic eyesore right here in town and I have no idea how anybody who doesn't live here would get it. (The guy who got it is in Oregon.) Then again, I don't know how the WTHAI people even came up with it in the first place.

The best chance I'll ever have to actually win one of those things and I didn't even look at it.

I don't think it was there 11 years ago, it's a fairly recent monstrosity.....er, addition. Maybe 5 or 6 years?

I didn't know your Mom was from Colorado Springs. Why have you not mentioned that? Anyway, tell her that it's in Acacia Park. She will laugh at the thought of some stupid fountain designed to attract rugrats being in Acacia Park.

I didn't know your Mom was from Colorado Springs. Why have you not mentioned that? Anyway, tell her that it's in Acacia Park. She will laugh at the thought of some stupid fountain designed to attract rugrats being in Acacia Park.

My Mom's from here, but my Dad was stationed at Fort Carson when they got married in 1973, and she moved out there with him and fell in love with the place. My Dad got a medical discharge when he developed diabetes in April 1974, and they wound up coming back here. My Mom says it was the worst mistake she's ever made in her life leaving Colorado.... and due to the financial restraints of having 5 kids, it wasn't until we took those 2 trips out there in 1996 and 1997 that she got to see the place again....

If my Dad would have served his full term in the Army, there's a decent chance I'd have been born in Colorado Springs. As it were, well, I happen to like it here.....

Just so it's clear, my Dad's from here as well. They met while they both worked at the local drive in while they were in high school....

I'm sure I'm not the only person on earth who owes their existence to a drive in, but not in the usual way....

They built that in 2001 after I was living there. I lived in the Holiday Inn on Garden of the Gods Blvd. - the one where they captured the escaped Texas convicts.

The spoiled one in my family was Sister #3, and Sister #1 was the black sheep who always clashed with my Mom, so for some odd reason, the "favorite" and "least favorite" wound up being neither the oldest, youngest, or middle child!

I feel for your poor brother. There's nothing worse than growing up and having your sisters rule the house....

I remember that because when I was in New York for BAM in January 2001, there was a rumor going around that the convicts were located in New York. Then a couple weeks later they turn up in Colorado Springs.

The final destination of my plane going home was Colorado Springs.....

Our mom is 91 now. If we want to do anything, it has to have my brother's approval or she won't even consider it.

We didn't rule the house, but I don't know how we made it with just 1 1/2 baths. Didn't have central A/C when I was growing up either.

That's funny, when my Dad got drafted he lived here. And instead of being sensible and just assigning him to Fort Carson, they sent him clear across the country (to the Land of Tattooed Whores).

My Dad was from Illinois (Quad Cities, represent!). You only like it there because you're not here. Ask your Mom, she'll tell you. Ha!

That is amazing to me. I knew you had all the sisters, and might have even known there were four of them, but I would have bet my money, marbles and chalk that you were the baby of the family!

And BoB, you are right. My sister is the middle child and we always called her the Peacemaker. I think birth order books are fascinating.

Well, having spent parts of 2 weeks out of my life there, I don't think any day of which didn't involve a pop up elevation-driven thunderstorm...... probably not. It amazed me the cavalier attitude the people out there took towards lightning. I am petrified of it, but if you gotta deal with it all the time, I guess it doesn't bother you....

The funniest thing was when we went up Pike's Peak in 1996. We got to the top just as a thunderstorm was coming over, and I refused to get out of the van. Then when I did, I hightailed it into the gift shop so fast that the elevation kicked my ass and the medical dude there had to check on me because I was so out of breath.....

I stayed at the hotel the day everyone went up in 1997 and watched the NASCAR race.....

The NASCAR race? You mean the Pikes Peak Hill Climb? I didn't realize that was a Nascar event. If that's case, then I guess you were here on the Fourth of July, in which case there might have been a few thunderstorms. But they're really not that common.

The picture of you running to the gift shop and losing consciousness makes me laugh. Someone forgot to tell you that we don't have oxygen here. Oxygen is for sissies.

Btw, there is no possessive apostrophe in Pikes Peak. That drives me nuts!
