From the original set, as Frank noted, we have:

Robert SHERWOOD = FOREST Whitaker, associated with IDI AMIN

There is also:
Christopher WREN = Larry BIRD, who goes with KEVIN McHALE
Yes! And as someone pointed out, both the Clyde and Jordan are RIVERS. Could that be Joan Rivers to associate with Johnny Carson? Or did one of the ballplayers once play with Mickey Rivers?

John Bonham must be here to go with Robert PLANT, but there are several choices of plant life on the list.

Does one of the names represent a type of sand? Because Chopin could be here to go with George Sand.

Zebulon Pike must be here as a fish. Hamilton Fish was Secretary of State under Ulysses S. Grant.

Baker and Porter are JOBS, which goes with Steve Wozniak.

Might Heinrich Boll go with Jonathan Edwards by way of Cotton Mather?

Rick Monday must be here as a DAY, but there are a lot of famous Days to choose from. Doris? Dorothy? Clarence?

Hay could also be here as Straw, for Jack Straw.

Spade is a card, which could lead to Andrew Card or Orson Scott Card.

From the mini-game:

Major is a Rank, which leads to J. Arthur Rank, who goes with William Wells.

Given some of the grumbling and frustration around this puzzle, one might be tempted to pair George SAND with Ezra POUND...

Chang & Eng BUNKER = Anita HILL, goes with CLARENCE THOMAS

Which would mean the other bank is probably Donna HANOVER, then.

And Ernest King and Nicolas Sarkozy are thus paired (though not by King = Ruler).

Edited to add:
Warren HASTINGS = Kathleen BATTLE, goes with JAMES LEVINE

Here's a couple I think are right.

Marble is a rock, which leads to Rock Hudson who goes with Susan St. James.

A pound is cash, which leads to Norm Cash who goes with Bill Freehan.

John Entwistle must link to Keith Moon.

Miranda is a moon of Uranus (heh heh.... that's the second time today I included "Uranus" in a post here, heh heh...). Thus:

Carmen MIRANDA = Keith MOON, goes with JOHN ENTWISTLE.

Cherry and Birch are both types of wood. Rosemary WOODS would go with Richard Nixon.

And Lily and Rose make Gennifer FLOWERS, to go with Paula Jones.

Praise the Lord! The nightmare is over!

There will be a few cases where a name could fit in more than one category, but hopefully those will be worked out like the Banks one already has been. I tried to limit possible ambiguities as much as possible, but I made a dumb choice on at least one where I forgot about an obvious alternative.

Margaret Mead must link to someone named Wine (Bobby Wine?).

This might be a bit of a reach, but...

Zach WHEAT & Condi RICE are STAPLES
C.S. (Clive Staples) Lewis could go with J.R.R. Tolkien.

There must be a KING in here somewhere to go with Bobby Riggs.

Another possibility.

Forbes is (or was) a field. That could lead to Sally Field or Marshall Field.

Smiler was tricky here. There are too many possible Kings, but what about:

72. St. James is a COURT
Margaret Court goes with 67. Bobby Riggs

Susan St. James then becomes our first person used twice.

Okay, I did look up Sarkozy's bio and found that he defeated Segolene Royal for the presidency. So there's the King connection.

Haven't found the FIELD connection yet. The STAPLES one seems unlikely because the connection should be a different person. But can anyone here be associated with the Staples Singers. (Pop Staples was in True Stories, the Talking Heads movie, but that seems VERY tenuous.)

UPDATED CONSOLIDATION

Combine the answers to the following 88 questions to make 31 pairs and 10 trios, according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover. Four answers will be used twice, each in two different capacities.

PAIRS

Haven't found the FIELD connection yet. The STAPLES one seems unlikely because the connection should be a different person. But can anyone here be associated with the Staples Singers. (Pop Staples was in True Stories, the Talking Heads movie, but that seems VERY tenuous.)
