Fishing Report

Fishing was fabu -- it quite often is when you have to walk in two hours (or so) in person or one hour (or so) by horse to get there. SteelersFan and I do not have horses, so we actually walked about three hours including backpacks to our favorite camping spot, then he fished up the creek while I fished down.

I notice that some of use are no longer posting gratuitously, but I still am.

The creek is higher than usual this year, as you might expect after 30-foot snowpack in some places. The first ford caught me off guard and dropped me into the drink, unfortunately also including my cell phone. We'll see what AllTel has to say about this...

I decided not to take my good, if somewhat dated, camera in favor of a couple of those one-use deals.

One of them joined my cell phone in the drink, so I don't know if any of those pics will turn out or not.

The other one was still safely enclosed in its original little sackie, so y'all may be favored with some beautiful Colorado photos sometime.

Or maybe not, I'll have to make the scanner work, and in answer to Dr. Phil's perpetual questions, how's that workin for ya, I gotta say, not very well. We'll see.

I have three band-aids on my left hand, one burn and two scratches, and about a dozen bruises of various sizes and colors from bouncing off rocks and trees to get to the good fishing holes, and a beauty of a ding on my left knee from getting whacked with a softball off a hot bat tonight. Ouch!

Thank, Kay -- it's mostly that the water is so high this year. Places where in years past, you could step across the stream in two steps, you now have to go around on boulders as big as your hall closet . . . OK, OK, you've told me a million times, don't exaggerate ...

That's an excellent camera. I have an earlier version of it and I love it. Of course it doesn't replace my pro Nikons.

Sure!

My first cast, I was using a black gnat, and you know the old saying, "Match the hatch." It wasn't a hatch, but black gnats are definitely normal trout food in Colorado.

I had tied the fly on wrong and got the biggest fish of the day up to the bank, where it flopped aimlessly for a few seconds, just enough for Casey to run over and sniff at it to see if it was worthwhile to herd before it got back into the water and was gone forever.

My second black gnat is still wrapped around a tree branch about 14 feet off the ground. Good luck to anybody who finds it.

That would be a great camera for me, and I'm going to have to consider it. My "good" camera cost around $125, and the crummy ones I took along this trip cost about $4 each, so the price is a little bit of a stretch. However, the one you mention would still be intact after a little dunk in the creek -- it would probably pay for itself in about three fishing and hunting trips.

The other one that got away was the biggest fish of Day Two. I cast into a huge pool with the eddies and riffles that big trout love so much. Just as the lunker struck, I slipped on a moss-covered rock, causing me to slack off on the line and netting only another multi-colored bruise for my trouble.

I couldn't be happier with one "extraneous" item that jumped into my pack of its own accord (that's my story and I'm stickin to it), a fuzzy green tennis ball which kept Casey happily occupied the whole time we were camped. If we weren't throwing it for her, she hauled it down to a little diversion in the stream and let it roll in to a little pool, then chased it into the pool, over and over. One of my young high-tech friends got a cell-phone video of this little maneuver, and if it ever makes it onto America's Funniest Animals, I'll let y'all know so you can see my little bonehead in action.
