I was born in 5019. I'm just back here visiting.

Does Marley ever make it on the show?

I'm not sure. There was a talk of a grumbler back in 2099 but that may have been Who Wants To Be A Martian Tetrazillionaire. Dick Clark took over for Meredith when she retired.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Damn! Am I ever gonna get another job? Selling walk-in bathtubs doesn't pay the mortgage, if you know what I mean....

I think when I joined here they wouldn't let me have "just 'ghost'". Strangely enough, they would let me have, & for a short while I think I did have, ghost1 or ghost0 or whatever. So I don't think the problem was that others claimed the name 1st, but that they didn't want anyone to have a dictionary word. I didn't like the "followed by numeral" aspect, so added my initials, which was my "non-job" login account at my job at the time. The job has since closed out 2nd accounts, so I had mine copied into a subdirectory within my named account (with the aid of nice people who are no longer there, & barely in time; one of the many many changes that have made the job a very different place these days). But I can at least still be "jmf" here; its kinda nostalgic, at this point.

You were ghostjmf1 for about a week when you couldn't log in under your regular ID back in early 2001.

And it's an interesting coincidence that both of our resident ghosts registered within a day or two of each other, as your author number was very close to Marley's....

Yes, but, assuming that NellyLunatic would be a unique id on this board, did you just add the 1980 from habit or do you feel that the numbers are an important part of your id?

Now, WHY we pick the numbers we pick is a topic all in itself, although one equally as interesting. I think at one time we went through a 'why those numbers?' thing.

I musta misread fanny's post. At any rate, I was talking about when I signed up for the original ABC board. When I signed on here I kept the login I already had. Except for that bloop you just cited.

Although we didn't trade notes at the time, I bet we were both holding out for "which substitute board is going to the be "the one"". I was on several of them at one point.

That was all from memory! :P

I used to use author numbers to compile the rankings, so I knew all the Top 50 BB's 8-digit author numbers almost by heart. I can't remember them as well now since it's been 4 years since I used that method, but I remembered how close ghost and Gh0st were to each other because I always thought it was a weird coincidence (And what's even weirder is Marley signed up with ABC for something else, and didn't come to the Bored until months later).

And I remember the ghostjmf1 incident because it wasn't all that long after teebee's last appearance on the Bored, and everyone was wondering if it was really you or not....

Here's Fanny! wrote:Talking about ID names and whatnot.

Most people with numbers after their names for email or id handles do so because somebody already has nabbed the original one. However, one would assume that handles would be specific to an individual group rather than the entire phpbb community.

That being the case, pretty much anything was up for grabs here. But the majority of people (myself included) automatically added their digits. Granted, if Bob46187 had just used "Bob" one might have to question which Bob that was, but it seems pretty safe that people would know who mrkelley, ulysses, fantine, littlebeast, nellylunatic et al were.

But still we add the numbers! Why?
On the ABC Bored (and it's various iterations) I put "100" after my handle because the original was already taken (surprisingly, since "earendel" is not commonly known even by Tolkien readers). Rather than try "1", "2" and so forth, I just picked a number that I figured would be available. When the search for our new home began, I used my handle without numbers on every one, just because I could.

Considering that my AOL address is also NellyLunatic1980, the numbers are indeed important.

Of course, that still doesn't explain the mysterious d00d00.....

Yes, I do (or is that "d00"?? ). I do recall trying to register some of the alternate possibilities for my handle, to avoid the "litt1ebeast13" phenomenon, but it became too troublesome. I do think that I claimed earende1100 and earendel1OO. But evidently I wasn't worth imitating because I don't recall anyone other than myself using an alternate spelling.

Not quite, oh Bored Historian. I registered this handle for the Bored (sometime around May 2000, IIRC) but then I lurked for months before my first post in December, after playing my one and only Round 2 phone game. But the registration wasn't for anything else!

Well, I'm sure there's a good reason you had to register to lurk, but I can't think of what that would be..... :P

So, would you have ever come out to play if you hadn't gotten that R2? Inquiring _TPTB_'s want to know.....

I automatically add 26 (letters in the alphabet, cuz I'm a terminal word geek and have been for like forever) to things, like my Prison Throw high score names and for other boreds where I'm not mini.

I remember troll's old 5709 came from how much money he won on a horse race one time.

And my oldest son that I DIDN'T adopt uses 13 or 1313, and he doesn't even know about the beast!

I don't know.

Partly, there was some fear about TPTB being prejudiced about folks on the Bored. Ironic, that, considering that 2000 was the heyday when they actually gave the Jipters recognition on the show.

More partly, it was being overwhelmed by the chatter. I didn't like the signal-to-noise ratio, having a somewhat different opinion about gratuitous posts, at the time. :P And I only had dial-up at home.

Since 2000 turned out to be the Golden Year of the Phone Game, I regret that I kept myself in isolation during that time.
