I have applied for a position at school as an academic advisor, working with undeclared majors. Also I would teach a freshman seminar. I could still teach my ethics classes part-time.
I have no idea what it pays, or if they will consider me qualified (they require two years of student advising, which I have done only unofficially).
Hmm. I better go see what else they have open.

We have until Friday. Word is they want this over by the end of the quarter. Final day for those leaving is June 27. I am leaving for my West Coast trip June 28, so that could have some nice closure about it.
I did just find a second job at school to apply for - Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Organizations.

Right now my concern is if I stay, and then a year or two from now the company goes belly-up, and I get nothing. This way I can get started on a new career.
Those Census applications are Byzantine, but I'm going to try one and get it out there.

This is a reasonable concern. If you must decide by Friday, though, you probably will have to do so on the basis of faith in yourself vs. confidence in the company, as it's unlikely that you'll hear anything so quickly about other possible jobs.Ritterskoop wrote:Right now my concern is if I stay, and then a year or two from now the company goes belly-up, and I get nothing. On the cheerful side, does your west coast trip involve anything exciting that you haven't yet mentioned -- or, perhaps even better, is it none of our damned business?

That definitely qualifies as exciting! (It's a good thing I'm going to Wyoming on the 30th, or I'd have to be jealous, then I'd feel guilty for being jealous, and....) Have mucho fun.kayrharris wrote:Well, I'm going with her. That makes it exciting, right?
Just kidding.....but we will have fun. Skoop's mom is coming too.

SF and Oakland for three days, then the train to Seattle, and two days there. Three baseball parks.
I will see two more in August, so there are five scheduled thus far. If I have a month off with no job, maybe I can knock out a few more!

I am not worried about finding a job. I can teach in Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system right now, with no teaching credentials, for $40,000. A few years of gaining credentials raises that. That's my worst-case scenario, which is not bad at all and might even be very good, depending on the school.silvercamaro wrote: If you must decide by Friday, though, you probably will have to do so on the basis of faith in yourself vs. confidence in the company, as it's unlikely that you'll hear anything so quickly about other possible jobs.
I like worst-case scenarios. They remind us that things are not that bad even if they are their worst.

That means you'll have to see a Mets game.....kayrharris wrote:Well, if you have the whole month off, I'll drag you to NYC with me to see Frank's play. You can count on that.

Good luck with whatever happens. I hate to see newspapers dying out. I think I owe about 80% of what I know to newspapers. I put myself through most of high school and college delivering newspapers.
Each person's situation is different. I tried to play a smart end game on my career at IBM, but after years of dodging layoffs, they never offered to lay me off when I was ready to go. So eventually, I just went. I have not regretted it for even a minute. Hope you'll be able to say the same, if that's the path you choose.

My vision for how the world will work some day is that everyone will be able to say and mean a similar thing.
I share your hope for Skoop.

Here's a column by Leonard Pitts of the Miami Herald, discussing the McClatchy situation, and newspapers in general. It ran in Wednesday's Austin American-Statesman (a Cox newspaper). I think Pitts frequently writes good thoughtful columns.

Leonard Pitts is awesome.
I am turning in my acceptance form today. I will find out by Monday for sure if they accept my acceptance, though I may informally chat with the others involved over the weekend, to see if I can figure out who accepted and who is senior.
I have made the lists of staying and going, and the deciding factor is that I want to do more service work. Working on campus or doing ethics hotlines are closer to that than producing a paper that rarely does much community service work anymore.

For a number of reasons, I think you made the right decision for you. I won't list any of them until after you find out if the company will let you go under the terms of the offer.Ritterskoop wrote:

I look forward to your reasons - we'll see how much they match my lists!silvercamaro wrote:For a number of reasons, I think you made the right decision for you. I won't list any of them until after you find out if the company will let you go under the terms of the offer.Ritterskoop wrote:

PAFBoy says even if they don't let me go on this go-round, I should go if another job comes open. I tend to agree, but that will be a different matrix. For now, I an exhilarated by the idea of leaving without something already in place. It means everything is possible.
