Don't waste pie on ingrates. Send it to me. :)

The trick to Rock Band is to practice a lot when no one is around. You can be a horrible singer (and trust me, I am one) but as long as you can keep somewhat vague pitch, you can pass the songs.

As a bass player, I am offended!

Oh, fake bass. That's different... Ha!

My brother and I are the musicians in the family (in regards to six string, that's not saying much as far as I am concerned but my brother is an amazing guitarist) and we are the absolute worst in the family at the Rock Band thing. Although the kids just have guitar and drums, I didn't even know there was a bass for it. I played bass for years and my brother plays bass professionally, and we'd probably still be terrible at it.

So just tell them that skillfullness at Rock Band is in inverse proportion to skillfullness at an actual instrument.

When I was on the Barenaked Ladies' cruise last year, their guitarist, Ed Robertson, hosted (and participated in) a Guitar Hero contest. Of course, some punk kid beat the pants off of him.

Oh, I like the Barenaked Ladies! (And the band is okay, too. Ha!) I've got a thing for the drummer.

Is the guitarist who sucks at Guitar Hero the dark haired one or the one with glasses?

Meanwhile, I don't know if the game we suck at is Guitar Hero or Rock Band. It has Flirtin' with Disaster on it.

The guitarist in question is the dark haired one. He sings lead on $1,000,000.00. He's more of a lead guitarist, while the other one (Steve) is more of the lead singer. And he didn't suck, he was really very good at it (a lot of down time on tours, I suspect), but he just got badly beaten by a kid. He heard plenty about that from his bandmates and other buddies.

To my knowledge, Guitar Hero is a one or two player competition, while Rock Band is something newer with 4 people playing together. I suspect they are created for diffent gaming platforms. I could be wrong about this whole paragraph, though.

We are using Guitar Hero and Rock Band on the PS2. The guitars for Guitar Hero work for Rock Band as well.

Ahem.

Depends on the song, really.

Small-ish world. I'm a Rock Boater and my RB roommate this year was a Ships & Dip person. :) I've been mulling S&D but I'm doing Cayamo next year instead.

Around the time that Sister Hazel was touring to promote "Somewhere More Familiar," I saw them a few times and got on their mailing list. Around the end of the century, they announced a cruise (The Rock Boat) where they'd be sailing with their fans and other artists. At the time, I thought that if a band I REALLY, REALLY liked ever did that, I'd have to consider it. I had always wanted to try a cruise anyway. When Barenaked Ladies announced their first "Ships and Dip" cruise in late 2005 or early 2006, I felt I HAD to go, as they are among my favorite live acts. I hadn't committed yet when they announced that Guster would be joining them. Since they had become another favorite live act for me (after first seeing them open for BNL), I booked my first cruise on the day of the announcement. I am really glad to have taken part in the first two, and hope to continue with many more. There can't possibly be any better cruise entertainment than seeing your favorite bands on stage and then bumping into them at dinner or in the casino.

p.s. I love the Cayamo lineup. That would be my second choice of all the Sixthman cruises. I've always liked Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and John Hiatt. I see they've also got Emerson Hart (formerly of Tonic), Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) and Ed Roland (Collective Soul), all of whom I have seen in the last year, or so. I don't know how familiar you are with Over the Rhine, but I saw them open a few shows about 10-12 years ago and really liked them at the time. How fun!

I played guitar twice tonight. The first time I did it right-handed and Emma had to "save" me twice, with her superior drumming skills.

The second time she switched me to lefty mode and I did somewhat better. While Jeff and the girls had 99% accuracy, I was in the low 60's.

I have noticed that on Rock Boat at least, the best place to spot performers is by the soft serve ice cream machine. I don't know what the allure is, but if you wanted to see an artist, you'd almost always find one by the ice cream dispenser. Perhaps BNL are also fiends for vanilla, after all, it is the finest of the flavors! The casino is also fun, especially if your favorites happen to play poker.

I'm really excited about Cayamo, although it is going to molest my wallet pretty hardcore- I bought well over $100 worth of CD's on Rock Boat this year and the Cayamo artists are even better. I haven't seen Over The Rhine yet, but I go to so many shows I'll be sure to seek them out before the cruise.

I'm mostly going for Glen Phillips, as he is my absolute favorite artist ever, but I adore the rest of the lineup. I am thrilled that they just added Indigo Girls. (squee!) I'd say come to the dark side and ship with us on Cayamo, but financially, I understand the impracticality of that suggestion.

At some point I figure a moment in time will happen where I am simultaneously not thrilled about the lineup for both Rock Boat and Cayamo which means I might try a S&D. If you guys get Carbon Leaf back again, I'm going to be a mite jealous, but I'll get over it.

And on topic, as far as I know, none of these bands are in Rock Band, although they should be. :) I have a wii so I am still waiting for that version of Rock Band to be released.

I mentioned seeing Glen Phillips recently. TTWS regrouped and played the middle slot in a Guster show at the Orange County (CA) Fairgrounds last summer. That was a great triple-bill.

One thing I love about these cruises is being exposed to artists I may not otherwise have seen. Carbon Leaf was one great such find. So were Gaelic Storm, Oakhurst and Jason Plumb. Last year's addition of Great Big Sea was an excellent one, but I was well familiar with them already.

I suppose I should mention Rock Band so PSM doesn't feel that her thread has been boatjacked.

Sorry for the boatjacking. ;) FWIW on the actual topic, some Toad fans have been emailing the Rock Band people to petition that a TTWS song be included. I could totally deal with that, although I have to say that one thing about doing Karaoke to Toad songs is that you truly appreciate Glen as a singer. Some of them are purely impossible to sing well.

I actually just saw Toad last week, although I missed the show with Brian VanderArk of the Verve Pipe. (We got a local band opening for Toad in NJ.) Oakhurst is also fabulous, and I seriously love some Carbon Leaf and Gaelic Storm.

I see Glen solo quite often, although if you're in CA, I'd imagine you'll win on that score based purely on proximity.
