I can almost see the Tetons

#1 Post by silvercamaro » Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:41 am

Plane tickets, check. Hotel reservations, check. Reservations for Annie and Lizbit in the doggie hotel, check.

I'm going back to the beautiful place!

I will fly to Jackson Hole on June 30, where Adventure Boy willl pick me up and take me back over Teton Pass to Driggs, Idaho. I will stay there until July 3rd, when he will drive me back to Cora, Wyoming, for my annual get-together with my friends from junior high and high school. Vast quantities of yakking, laughing, and wine-drinking will commence. I will come home on July 9.

We will hope for the absence of forest fires this year.

The dogs had a trial run in the boarding facility when I went to Dallas for the J! audition, but this will be the first time they face an extended stay. Their bill will be the single most expensive element of the entire vacation, but -- I learned this morning-- they each will get a "free" bath out of the deal. Lizbit will be pleased. Annie will hum through the entire process. I was worried that the Bed and Biscuit might already be booked up through the Fourth of July weekend, but I sort of got the impression when I called that, if it had been necessary, somebody on the vet staff would have taken Annnie home.

MapQuest shows Cora as a dot on the map, but that dot merely marks the location of a log post office built in the late 19th century. There is no "town." The area is consists of widely scattered ranches and homes, from tiny cabins to mansions, on acreages. The deer and the antelope play.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. I will anticipate a nice daily recap ala saucy/earendel when you return. :D

Enjoy them while you can. There are moves afoot to rename a lot of geographic places because their traditional names are offensive/sexist/something, and although the Tetons are not yet (apparently) on the list of required name changes, it is probably just a matter of time.

Then the name police will start against flavorings and such. I already feel uncomfortable about enjoying vanilla. I hope that that does not come too soon, because there is a cool scene in The Trashy Novel (my mystery/thriller) which involves someone eating vanilla ice cream, and her reaction when she realizes what it really is. It's actually a key scene, and leads to the solution, although it turns out to be very roundabout.

Way cool!

I thought the subject line meant on a clear day you can see forever after last night's rain.

To the best of my knowledge, the entire Teton range is a Hooters-free zone.

You'll probably have a message from J! on your cell phone when you get off the plane in Jackson (no Hole, that's outside of town).

Enjoy!

But the airport itself is called Jackson Hole Airport.

I could probably throw a rock from one end of the airport to the other, and I throw like a girl. I could easily throw one from one end of the lobby to the other...

You know, Jackson Hole isn't so far from me. Would you have time for a quick visit if I drove over on 6/30? Not saying I could - I kinda feel like I'm forgetting something about that timeframe - but its certainly doable. It sounds like your schedule is pretty planned so no biggie if it doesn't work. I don't know where Cora is, but if you drive through Shoshone, stop for one the best milkshakes you'll ever have. Not sure if they have two-foot shakes, though.

The town is Jackson. The airport is 10 or 15 miles outside the town in the valley called Jackson Hole (as is the airport, as mini already pointed out.)

I would be delighted to find such a message on my cell phone, as they would not be asking me to come to L.A. the next day. According to Maggie, their invitations come with at least three weeks notice to prospective contestants who must buy plane tickets. I would find a way to make it work. I should have such problems.

I sit corrected. BTW, the photo is from my 2006 vacation that I paid for with my BAM winnings.

t-girl, that would be totally fabu if we could work something out. I will send you the details to see if anything might be feasible. Of course, you'd also have to grit your teeth and put up with the company of a young, charming firefighter who resembles Brad Pitt. That might be a deal-breaker for you. (No! You can't meet him and leave me stranded at the airport!)

Sounds like a fun trip! Will you be taking your laptop, or does Annie need it to work on her opera during your absence?

If all of the scenery is as beautiful as the pic BobJ posted, I am painfully jealous!

I think that would be fine with him. :)

I forgot to say that I love the drugstore in Shoshoni! That's a mandatory stop on the drive to and from Casper and the northwest part of the state. The Yellowstone Drug has THE best malts in the universe, and the cheeseburgers are yummy, too. Alas, it's a bit far away from everywhere else to make a special trip there for the chow.

Annie and I will be in negotiations for the custody of the laptop. She insists that she knows how to get out of her room so she can plug it in. I have no doubt that she can, but I don't think it's right for her to break into the office area to find a phone jack.

All the scenery is as beautiful as Bob's pic times 100,000. Any single place you look is amazing. The totality of the panorama is a religious experience.

Been there -- frequently. Quite often, all the parking places out front are filled with lines of Harleys, which might seem a little intimidating. When you go in, though, 75 percent of the clientele looks like lawyers. The other 25 percent -- the ones who look like bikers and ranchers -- really are lawyers.

What kind of crummy hotel room have you reserved for her that doesn't even have a phone jack? :P
