Miss Jai, I read in another thread where you told my mom about The Art of Racing in the Rain. Because I'm very good at finding things on the internet, I discovered that the nice people at Harper Collins would let me read the first 55 pages on-line, and I did. My mom better go to the bookstore today, because I want to finish it now!

Thank you for telling her (and me) about that book, because that dog Enzo is a lot like me, I think. I found it particularly interesting that we both got smart by watching television -- him because he was bored, and me because I couldn't move after my wreck. He never learned to read, though, and it puzzles me how he wrote a book, unless he thought all the words into the inside of his owner's eyelids, and the owner wrote them down. Anyway, I wish I could tell him the secret of reading. It's to watch the commercials, too! Almost always, the commercial people write some of the words on the screen while a voice is saying them. If you pay close attention to lots of commercials, you are bound to start recognizing some of the words while -- and then before -- the voice says them out loud. Before long, with diligence, the tv sound can be on mute, and a smart dog will still know what the voice is talking about. (After I got my laptop, I looked at the captions for pictures on the internet, too, which was most helpful and let me speed through Home School.)

So, I am writing a book, too, but it's a different kind of book. More accurately, I am finishing a book that was started by Tigger, my dalmatian big sister, who knew more about the world, the sky, ancient history and two-footers than anybody and told me all kinds of wonderful stories that explain a lot of important things.

Furthermore, I'm making Lizbit watch all the commercials on tv.

Miss Annie, I am amazed to hear that you are not only writing an opera but also a book. How do you find time to work on these projects?

I'm still working on the opera, but it's pretty far along. It needs some polishing and more music, but it's at the stage where it's okay to put it in the back of my mind some of the time and let my subconscious do some of the work. Then it pops out!

The work on the book is slower, because I'm just getting started on that. Even though I know overall what it should look like when I'm done, I'm still arranging the bits and pieces in my mind like a jigsaw puzzle.

Plus, I don't have a job, so I don't have to leave home to herd cows or anything.

I'm glad you enjoyed the first 55 pages, Annie. It gets even better, so tell your mom to buy a copy ASAP! I saw it for sale today at Costco for just over $13. I bought my copy from Amazon, which wasn't bad either.

Can't wait to read your book. I'm sure it will be a best-seller!

Just make sure your opera doesn't have too many notes.

I know it shouldn't concern me, but it is a smidge disconcerting to contemplate that a brownhound has not only a richer intellectual life than I, but a more mature approach to life. sigh.

I shall use it as an inspiration to accomplish more, and waste less.

Mr. mr, I never heard such talk. You are a teacher, which is the most important job in the world, and a science teacher at that! It's because of you and people like you that our children's children and our puppies' puppies will keep making the world a better, smarter place.

I like science, but I'm not such a good teacher. Other than showing Lizbit how to do squirrel habitat deconstructions, I've been able to teach her hardly anything. She still can't read worth beans.

Those who can, teach. Those who can't, hum tunes and call it opera.

In my opinion, we're all pretty darn special.
