What's your line of defense? --BobNellyLunatic1980 wrote:Defend. I can easily see 5 tricks being taken to prevent them from making game.

I think I'll defend.
Spoiler
If the defense just does the obvious and sets up spades at the start, declarer can give up a club to set up his 4th club trick giving him 4 clubs, 2 hearts, 1 diamond and 1 spade for 8 tricks. Now, if the defense cashes their spade when in, the position is tight for declarer to get his 9th trick by a heart-diamond squeeze on LHO. (Run the clubs from dummy keeping the heart threat in hand and the diamond threat on the board - even if they knock out the DA after cashing the last spade, you're in the right hand for this to work).
But, the defense can defeat this by refusing to cash the last spade when in with a club. Probably even better for the defense is lead spade A, then duck a spade to declarer. Now, LHO has a free little spade to discard safely later. When the defense gets in with a club or heart, they should shift to a diamond (forcing the A). I believe this will work against anything that declarer can do.
(Note that declarer can get 3 club tricks without giving up the lead and then duck a spade for his 8th trick, but as long as the position isn't tight, can't get the 9th).

I don't think this defense works. After three spades and a club duck into RHO's hand, if the defense refuses to cash the spade, setting up, say, a diamond instead, what does LHO pitch on the run of the clubs? If he pitches a spade, the defense never gets the fourth spade and declarer has time to set up a second diamond trick. And if he holds on to all four spades, he has to release one of his red suit guards. The same problem occurs if the defense starts with a spade to the Ace and a spade duck -- LHO has to strip down to the bare King or release a red suit guard.

I don't think you read my full post (or I just phrased it badly). I have the defense leading spade K and then totally ducking a spade to declarer. Note that I had initially switched the places of the spade A & K and subsequently fixed it in my original post.

No time as I depart tomorrow and will be "out of town" until June 16th. Fargo-golf, California-Margaret's family reunion, back to Fargo for golf and nephew's wedding. Ace care to buy me a drink when I am in town?
I am busy "clearing" my desk, or better description would be getting stuff ready for my secretary to handle while I am away.
Bob, in another thread you said you got the Bridge Bulletin and saw my name listed. I just got my June issue today and could not find my name. What page? Do they have multiple printings maybe? Just curious. The ACBL site is updated showing my rank etc.

If you got a flawed copy, swing by while you're in California and I'll be happy to give you mine to keep as a souvenir. Maybe we can even get a game in while you're here. --Bobkusch wrote:Ya, I know that and looked, not in mine. And they were on several and skipped pages in this issue. Strange. Re: Double dummy problem
I can't find any games Sunday night, and there's nothing convenient to me on Wednesday. There's a sectional in Irvine the weekend of June 6-8 and the Worldwide Bridge Contest in Long Beach Friday night or Saturday afternoon, but I guess both of those are a rather long haul from Chula Vista. Monday or Tuesday evening could work if you could get up to the West side. --Bobkusch wrote:Would love to try that. Not sure if we can though. I will be in Chula Vista from the 5th-8 getting back to Westminster mid afternoon on that Sunday. It would have to be Sunday night (unless my daughter really really wants to do NTN with Dan) in Newport Beach, or Wednesday the 11th as we leave on the 12th. Family plans on Monday and Tuesday (golf-Tuesday ) fill those days. I will have a rental car until Tuesday so I could drive to somewhere if needed. I have played at the Long Beach club and it is only 10 minutes or so from Margaret's sister's home. What club and/or day is best for you? Canoga Park?

Not so temporary insanity.
A good lawyer could sell that to any jury.
