The Llamarama - Five Years Later

Five years ago this week, fourteen of the seventeen "llamas" of the first season aired on their second chance and won between $1000 and $250K. BB's Lily, myself, Scott (Taurus) and Ms. Cheesecake were included. The three who did not participate all taped their original appearance after the "llamarama." The Llamarama taped November 13, 2002, and some of us returned on November 19.

In fact, the days of the week are the same this year. For example, Lily took the hotseat on Monday, May 19th and carried over to Tuesday, May 20th.

In an odd sort of coincidence, I knew the contestant who won $250k: he was a guy from Capital One who worked in the same building I did, on the floor directly below mine. It was QUITE cool that he was able to go from -0- to $250k, but it did not get the same draw at Capital One that my run did: he kept a pretty low profile about his llama, and was not particularly inclined to raise his profile when he won at the Llamarama.

But a sort of interesting point is that, following the Llamarama, two of the three highest winning WWTBAM contestants in the Commonwealth of Virginia worked for the same company, in the same building (the third one was Weyoun, who I think was still at UVa at the time); I think that the two of us actually won more than all of the other people from Virginia, combined, even taking into account Steve's winnings. It was an awesome responsibility...

That was the prime time Llamarama, which aired seven years ago this week. The $250K winner was your guy Martin Poteralski then of Glen Allen, VA. On the prime time version, none of the five who reached the Hot Seat missed a question, finishing with 16K, 64K, or 250K.

The syndi $250K winner was Kathy Hempel (Lily) of this Bored. Some of us are the few to have missed a question 2x on the show, including myself when I had a free shot at 64K and missed.

This was pre-MBFFB®, but I have faint memories of that question.... or at least the discussion of it because, being in retail as I am, I have long been a proponent of moving Thanksgiving to the third Thursday of the month for economic reasons. Of course, I still find it amazing how little people know about our calendar.... I think it irritates me even more than the simple geography questions that are missed....

I have good memories of the Llamarama as well,including gathering the people where I worked around a TV and convincing them that it was actually me who was on the phone during John's PAF question.

I had a great viewing party with my school kids, family and friends. I made so many wonderful friends through BAM too. It's truly been a blessing.

I have good memories of the Llamarama as well,including gathering the people where I worked around a TV and convincing them that it was actually me who was on the phone during John's PAF question.

Since everything is about me, I remember Llamarama fondly because I was in fact a successful PAF during Llamarama (although not for John). And it was a gas, because I had met the contestant when we were in the same group on the original taping day.
