Irish immigrants in America were poorly treated for much of the 19th century, but especially in the years during and immediately after the Famine.

The biggest difference between us and the Chinese immigrants, or today's Hispanic and Latino immigrants, is that we don't have many "racial" characteristics that made us stand out too radically from the majority. Made it much easier to assimilate.

Wasn't it Nebraska that tried to outlaw speaking German during WWI, but had the law overturned by the US Supreme Court? I might be misremembering the details, but it was something like that.

My dad made a point of telling me that when his father came from Ireland to Philadelphia in 1907, it was common to see signs that read, "Help Wanted- No Irish Need Apply."
