Lyrically Speaking Game 3

#1 Post by elwoodblues » Tue May 05, 2026 8:59 pm

I will leave the previous game open a little longer because some people still have not played.

For this week only I am bringing back Last Word Wednesday. The last word of each title will be the same.

Some of these are well-known songs, but to complete the game I had to find some deep cuts. I tried to put them in order from best-known to least-known.

1. When you're down and out,
When you're on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

2. They burned down the gambling house
It died with an awful sound
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground

3. Well, if it rains, I don't care
Don't make no difference to me
Just take that streetcar that’s goin' up town

4. Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, muggers, and thieves

5. Get a load of him, he's so insane
You better get your coat dear
It looks like rain

6. You're lost inside your houses
There's no time to find you now
While your walls are burning and your towers are turning
I'm gonna leave you here and try to get down to the sea somehow

7. And ain't it wond'rous, the way she does it
Gives love and loves it
Ain't it right, ain't it right, ain't it right

8. Beaumont to Biloxi
Sea breeze at your door
Gypsy rings, dang hurricanes
White silver sandy shore

I don't think Melissa Ethridge's "Somebody Bring Me Some Water" is in here, but it's the only other song I can think of offhand that fits the theme...

I grew up watching "You Can't Do That On Television." The green slime became iconic, but there was another magic word....

I have quite a bit of this stored up in my doomsday bunker. It's pretty cool that you can store this instead an actual water saving critical storage space. It works well to rehydrate the freeze-dried foods as well. I did try some. Mixed it with just tap water. It tastes exactly the same. No stale taste or anything.

Written and recorded by Rodney Crowell and also recorded by Jimmy Buffett and by George Strait. Even if you never heard of the song, Buffett seems like a logical guess.
