The Mecca 100 - #50-46

#50. "Blame it on the Boogie" - The Jacksons (1978)

Written by British songwriter Mick Jackson with the intention of it being recorded by Stevie Wonder, it was instead picked up by The Jacksons in 1978 and released as the lead single from their comeback album Destiny. The song stalled at #54 on the Hot 100, and faded into obscurity... until it became an incessant and inescapable earworm on Mecca Radio over the past couple years. I had never heard this song before, and thought it was actually some lost early solo Michael Jackson until I looked it up. It's pretty clear listening to this song that the then-20 year old Jackson was destined for stardom...

#49. "Never There" - Cake (1998)

The Bored's minimetoo26 introduced me to Cake many, many years ago thanks to the song "Nugget," which made the group a running joke as to how much they sucked because of that one awful song. Then in the early 2010's I discovered the Cake hits "Short Skirt, Long Jacket" and especially the epic "The Distance," and I realized just how good they actually were. It took the Mecca CD in 2014 to introduce me to this slice of Cake, and while it's not Distance great, little is. Major props to any band with a solo trumpet player as one of its primary members...

#48. "Mama's House" - Push Baby (2019)

Remember the 2014 hit "Me and My Broken Heart" by a UK band called Rixton? I do, because the new music from that era was fucking awesome! Well, that band went on hiatus for a few years and came back under a new name, Push Baby. This was their debut single under the new moniker, and while it wasn't near the smash their Rixton hit was, this catchy ode to the down and out twenty-something was in heavy rotation on Mecca Radio during the latter half of 2020.

#47. "Girls Chase Boys" - Ingrid Michaelson (2014)

Speaking of that fucking awesome music from 2014.... here is Ingrid Michaelson's second entry in the countdown. I already knew who she was from that first entry, "Be OK," so it was cool to hear this then-new one pop up on the Summer 2014 CD!

#46. "Ocean Avenue" - Yellowcard (2003)

In the early 2000's, the Jacksonville based band Yellowcard moved to California to hit it big in the music biz. Singer Ryan Key was homesick not just for his old hometown, but for all of the fun he had there with his other bandmates during their teen years, and the result was "Ocean Avenue"... a missing home song disguised as a lost love song. It's got that really great jamming rock effect of a lot of early 00's rock that was missing from a lot of its 90's genero-rock predecessors. And without Mecca Radio playing it a lot the past few years, I may have never heard its awesomeness...

LOL, I am just as smart as anyone else here who relies on Wikipedia (or AI) for their knowledge....
